From China to the U.S. to the European Union, rice production is falling and driving up prices for more than 3.5 billion people across the globe, particularly in Asia-Pacific – which consumes 90% of the world’s rice.
The global rice market is set to log its largest shortfall in two decades in 2023, according to Fitch Solutions.
And a deficit of this magnitude for one of the world’s most cultivated grains will hurt major importers, analysts told CNBC.
“At the global level, the most evident impact of the global rice deficit has been, and still is, decade-high rice prices,” Fitch Solutions’ commodities analyst Charles Hart said.
Rice prices are expected to remain notched around current highs until 2024, stated a report by Fitch Solutions Country Risk & Industry Research dated April 4.

I think you mean a few billion.
According to this post, that is apparently a good thing:

Rice is evil and killing the erf. Or something. 😁👍
In before the low carb zealots say they never eat rice anyway.
Sounds like this shortage is going to cost the American taxpayer alot more to feed the world.
Rice is not good for you....................
A Harvard Medical School study has reported that eating a single serving of white rice has “almost the same effect as eating pure table sugar” due to its high glycemic index (GI), which results in a quick spike in insulin and blood sugar.
I have 200 pounds of rice, so I’m good for a while.
Pure Glycemic Index as a standalone metric is close to worthless. It turns out that eating fat with an item, drastically lowers the glycemic index of the item.

Stopped right there.
“In before the low carb zealots say they never eat rice anyway.”

You barely made it by just a couple of posts!
What about real rice?
LOL, you made it by 3 minutes!
Another gut-punch for Anheuser-Busch.
Slows it down...................
Looks like another of the WEF’s wishes is coming true....people better wake up and soon.
This will be spun to blame “climate change,” unexpected rain, etc... BULLSH**
The REAL reason?
This is a direct consequence of asinine green policies against fossil fuels in the West, and the war in Ukraine.
Rice uses large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer, almost as much as corn, per acre.
Nitrogen comes from natural gas. What happened to natural gas prices 12+ months ago?
They mentioned Pakistan’s crop declining 31%. Remember that Pakistan had severe blackouts and riots because of energy shortages.
Germany can only pursue idiotic green policies, because when TSHTF as it did last year, it can outbid the 3rd world for available energy and gas supplies. Then the 3rd world will suffer the consequences, which we now see.
There is thousands of different kinds......................
Whenever someone in person makes an unsolicited comment about the carbs I am eating, I usually just say, “look at me, look at you.” and that usually shuts them right up. I only do it if they make a comment I didn’t ask for about something I am eating.
Organic Brown Rice is $4/pound.
Definitely changed my buying habit until sanity returns.
And I planted a bunch of potatoes this year.
