Discovery of a gene in multiple mammalian species could pave the way for a highly effective, reversible and non-hormonal male contraceptive for humans and animals. Researchers identified expression of the gene, Arrdc5, in the testicular tissue of mice, pigs, cattle and humans. When they knocked out the gene in mice, it created infertility only in the males, impacting their sperm count, movement and shape.

Instead of knocking out the gene, you can inhibit the activity of the protein that it produces. From the article:
“The study indicates that the protein encoded by this gene is required for normal sperm production. Oatley’s team will next work on designing a drug that would inhibit production or function of that protein.”
So the question is: With altered DNA what kind of animal will the new human sperm produce?

Inhibiting production of the protein would be “knocking out the gene” one way or another.
You are correct that drug inhibition of the protein would not be.
From a purely Machiavellian standpoint, the people “we” would be most happy if they did not reproduce (i.e. woke liberals) are the ones most likely to willingly adopt and even embrace this.
But then again they are also likely the ones who are already emasculated beta males and incels who are inured to NOT pursuing or engaging in heterosexual intercourse.
It’s a win-win at this level.
