It’s a case that can happen to any of us, unfortunately.
I thought that that might be flying glass, the result of shooting thru a storm door.
When you are 85, just laid down for the night, LIGHTS ARE OFF—is pulled back up by doorbell at 10 PM, and sees a 6 foot black kid trying to open the outside storm door-—
YOU WILL REACT-—YOU WILL REACT if you are 75-65-55 even.
Blacks have raised such havoc & chaos over the past 5 years that NO ONE will trust them at that hour rattling the door handle.
This is all a product of their own behavior, IMO.
Try all of this at my house when the house lights are off-—OWNER WAS IN BED-—LIVING ALONE-—and see how fast I shoot.
Too many "unknowns" here. The guy's age being a big one. I took care of my Dad for the last 10 years of his life. By the time he was 85 his brain was in a sorry state...as confirmed by scans.
Also,I've read that the kid actually *entered* the house. If that,by chance,is true that works in the shooters favor.
I'm completely willing to believe that this kid meant no harm...that he just made a silly mistake. But,OTOH,I've seen no evidence to suggest that the shooter was evil. I'd be very willing to believe that the shooter was just a scared old guy.
If I am the lawyer for the old man, I will instantly claim my elderly distraught client did not understand his right to remain silent.
I don’t blame the old man for shooting him. Yarl seems like a nice kid, but he is black, and therefore white people, and in fact, any race of person is justified in shooting first and asking questions later under the circumstances. St Louis is chugging-full of N-words, Yarl was mistaken for one of them.

Yep, the situation contributed to this. 1) 10pm on a week night. 2) Black BLM riots for the past 4 years with little or no police reaction and no deterrence setting up some who might fear for their lives. 3) "pulling" on the door

The glass was shattered and Lester told the police he shot through the glass of the storm door
It’s a bad shoot. The old man should have waited until the youth entered, if that was his intention.
The old man will probably be consigned to a retirement home, as they usually do with senior convicts.

A reasonable person would shut and lock the main door. A reasonable, armed person wouldn’t open the main door in the first place. They’d either use Ring or talk through the door. I don’t feel sorry for the old man. He’s a dumb fuck who deserves what’s coming.
