An analysis of voting records found that some of the most-Republicans states have some of the least-conservative lawmakers...
It seemed like a slam dunk: Wyoming, the most conservative state in the country, was poised to introduce school choice, a policy overwhelmingly supported by conservatives that also enjoys support from most Democratic voters, especially minority ones.
There was no doubt the bill had the votes to pass: Out of the state House’s 62 members, 57 are Republicans. A majority of the chamber was not only supporting the bill, but had co-sponsored it.
Then, it died

That's why we can't stop liberals, leftists, and Democrats.
The article also makes the claim “the states with the boldest Republicans were also some with the narrowest margins of control and cites Florida as one example.
Florida has a supermajority of Republicans in both chambers of the legislature, plus all statewide cabinet officers are Rs. Not sure what the author was thinking when that was wrote.
He was trying to depress and discourage it appears.
Again, I said you point is valid, but it still takes a well placed GOPe stooge for it to be accomplished.
The data is from 2021. FL elected super majorities in the 2022 election.
People gots paid. Killed da bill.
Democrats are evil and Republicans are cowards. I joined the Constitution Party.
All Republirat electeds are cowards. Every single one of them. That’s all you need to know.
Just shows its a one party system.
No one smart wants to get involved in politics.
One should not discount the importance of amateur sports in schools (either public OR private schools). Speaking as a father of twin boys, one an All American runner and the other still holds the record for career wins in wrestling for his weight class, it’s an irreplaceable platform for the building of mental resilience, strength of character and fortitude.
Even allowing for the fact the author was citing obsolete data, Florida Republicans in 2022 did not have a narrow margin of control in the legislature.
The Rs had a 23 to 16 majority in the Senate, and a 76 to 42 majority in the House (two vacancies at one time) in 2022, not a super-majority but not a narrow margin of control either.
The vaunted super-majority gives the Rs bragging rights for sure and enables them to waive the rules governing debate but Dems have been getting steamrollered in Florida for awhile.
Maybe the author had a point but he misstated the facts about Florida. If he wanted to make the case that the 2018 governor's race was razor thin he is four years late.
For me, sports are to be enjoyed for their own merits.
I got good enough at running, that I could run a 1:10 mid-marathon. I didn’t do that on school time or anything.
I’m not trying to be critical of sports themselves, but if a person is willing to vote against school choice because of sports, that isn’t rational to me. For some short term fun, that person is choosing to vote against his child’s education in the long-term.
But consider this, from the article:
They wondered whether that was worse than doing nothing at all, because it let lawmakers take credit for doing something and might lead parents to let their guard down even though in reality, little had changed.
Even if there was no money, or misleading language that would make the bill look attractive but actually dilute the idea so that it did nothing, it could also be smart people thinking ahead to protect themselves from something they might not want anywhere near their kids.
bttt
The answer to this question is very simple. Politicians are people who are above all else CONTROL FREAKS. School choice is an initiative that would permit a bit POWER and CONTROL to the little people. My friends, it is just that simple. Think of yourselves as little children and the politicians as your authoritative parents. Now you’ve got it!
Iowa just passed it.
But the deepest red counties were very angry. They viewed it as cutting the funding for smaller schools (which the dems had preached to them).
And yes, the sports teams were mentioned.
The Establishment GOP has ZERO care for conservatism, they will preach it at election time, to get the votes, and then rule just like the uniparty they are..
Until folks WAKE UP to this reality, nothing is going to change.
Being to the right of the average elected “republican” includes everyone who is to the right of left leaning moderate.
That works out to a 63% majority, which matches the graph. But I get your point, comparing them to tight states like WI, AZ and NH is a stretch. Still, they were voting much more conservative than their peers with wider majorities. I guess if we believe the writer’s theory, FL will vote less conservative with a larger majority.
School choice?
Harvard, because my Johnny is #1.
“Being to the right of the average elected “republican” includes everyone who is to the right of left leaning moderate.”
Yes, even in Texas which is much more center left than most people acknowledge, Texan or otherwise.
