Joe Biden’s cousin Joe Blewitt from Mayo said the family is “thrilled” that the US President has finally confirmed he will be coming “home” to Mayo next week.
Mr Blewitt said that even the weather seems to have improved since the news broke as the rain went away on Wednesday morning.
Mr Blewitt is just back from the White House where he celebrated St Patrick’s Day with the President and spent a week in Washington.
He said that “the whole place is buzzing” in Ballina, where President Biden is expected to visit and make a public address next Friday.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror/Star, Mr Blewitt said: “We’re absolutely delighted.
“It’s all under wraps yet, things are very tight here yet, what with his movements and all that, and it will be very tight, we won’t know probably until the day beforehand.
“But we’re thrilled, we’re thrilled that he’s finally coming and that it’s finally confirmed today.”
Mr Blewitt is President Biden’s third cousin and he told the Mirror that the US Secret Service have already landed on the ground to conduct sweeps ahead of the special visit next week.
He added: “There’s loads of them around, but it’s great, there’s a great buzz around Ballina.
“And the rain has lifted and as long as the rain stays away it will make it better again.
“So we’re thrilled and we’re looking forward to it.
“I’m only back from the White House myself and that was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
“It was really special, very special.”
