Taiwan has missiles that can hit most of China.
Milley has announced his retirement. Remember he communicated with China to tell them he would let them know if Trump was about to act against them. If the US and China went to war and the US lost while Milley was chief of staff, the treason accusations would be immediate.
I say, check Milley’s exact retirement date. China will not attack Taiwan before that date.

This is the key point. China cannot project power into the India Ocean. Japan and the US can.
OTOH, the clock is ticking on China. Demographic crash is already happening. Their access to high end electronics is now extremely restricted. The leadership may think that their only way to stay in power is to start a war and break thru the first island chain. But suppose they succeed. That doesn’t fix demographics.
LOL. At 1.35 billion they have about 300,000,000 military aged males. Maybe more.
They don't need actual "nuclear" weapons. They just need radioactive waste to make dirty bombs ( they have that from nuclear plants). Mix that with a quick drying epoxy, load it on cruise missiles, and explode them over Shanghai. It would make the city uninhabitable until it is all removed ( which would have to be done by hand with scrapers). That would take many many years, if they could do it at all.
They’ve got to do it before a weak-kneed, chicken-livered, yellow-striped, bought and paid for Biden leaves office. They KNOW he won’t do anything about it.
That's why attacking, before, the election would give him a boost.
