Paris (AFP) – French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published Sunday that Europe must not be a "follower" of either the US or China on Taiwan, saying that the bloc risks entanglement in "crises that aren't ours".
His comments risk riling Washington and highlight divisions in the European Union over how to approach China, as the US steps up confrontation with its closest rival and Beijing draws closer to Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.
"The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must be followers and adapt ourselves to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction," Macron told media including French business daily Les Echos and Politico as he returned Friday from a three-day state visit to Beijing.
Citing his prized ideal of EU "strategic autonomy", the French leader said that "we must be clear where our views overlap with the US, but whether it's about Ukraine, relations to China or sanctions, we have a European strategy."
"We don't want to get into a bloc versus bloc logic," he added, saying Europe "should not be caught up in a disordering of the world and crises that aren't ours".

And to think, we initially got involved in the south asian/vietnam bs to help save/protect french businesses there.
He has no problem being a follower of Germany though.
Macron says Europe must not be ‘follower’ of US, China on Taiwan because the Chinese pay better and, being a vassal isn’t so bad; we can set up easy courses so everyone can learn Mandarin.
Next time maybe we let the French get out of their own problems.
French governments have consistently betrayed the US. The French elites have always been slime.
How about they stay out of Taiwan/Red China, we stay out of Ukraine/Russia.
“We do not follow anyone; we have our own Vichy.”
Has France surrendered yet?
I think that Macron’s reluctance to follow the Neocons to war against China stems from him not wanting to see Paris get leveled. I know, strange reason...
just set an awning on fire
Did your old lady tell you to say that?
Hey I have a nice French rifle I will sell you. It’s in great shape. Never fired dropped once.
A piece of fromage for the man, s’il-vous-plait.
Macron owns Europe now?
He actually has a point to a degree
>French governments have consistently betrayed the US. The French elites have always been slime.<
Yes, just like the U.S. UniParty.
Well, Macron is right about that. Europe actually has no dog in the ChiCom-Taiwan dust up. So they are better off following some sort of low-key neutral stance.
Contrary to the incessant French bashing here they do have forces very capable and are pretty steady in use
They rescue folks in Africa far more than we do due to their proximity and familiarity and I guess noblesse oblige
They recently saved the entire nation of Mali from being overrun by Al Quada bands
Their fast response expeditionary groups are top shelf
They placed I believe three battalion air armor and light infantry combined groups in Mali from France Chad and Coite de Ivoire in 72 hours with companies on site in less than 24 hours when the capital of Mali was 48 hours from sure defeat
And the French Foreign Legion is about as professional disciplined a group of 7-8000 man fighting force you’ll find anywhere
Just saying
Yes their politics aside from the LePens often sucks
They do however still prize their distinct culture unlike us where ours is being destroyed by the uniparty and woke totalitarianism
As for Taiwan that will be settled in time and it’s not really their fight
And I hate to break it to you but some sort of drawn out deal is far more likely that a war with China over it at this point
These are just my observations
