RE: What the heck is an equity grant?

An equity grant is a non-cash compensation given to someone, giving them a percentage of ownership to a company. This may come in various forms, such as stock options, restricted stocks, virtual or phantom options, or stock appreciation rights.

Shares in the company, usually in Restricted Units or Performance Share Units, but also options at some company. Once you get to Director level at most companies, you get some equity grants each year that vest over 2-5 years. The higher up you go, the larger the % of your compensation is usually in equity.
