Trump calls for defunding FBI and DOJ while party opposes defunding the police
Washington Examiner ^

Posted on 04/05/2023 3:28:25 PM PDT by GulliverSwift

Former President Donald Trump continued to denounce the federal government after his arraignment on Tuesday, calling on House Republicans to “defund” the Department of Justice and the FBI until “they come to their senses.”

Trump made the call in a Truth Social post on Wednesday morning, just one day after the former president was charged on 34 counts of falsifying business records in a Manhattan courthouse. Neither government agency is directly involved with that criminal case, which centers on hush money payments Trump allegedly made to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about a sexual affair.

“REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD DEFUND THE DOJ AND FBI UNTIL THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES,” Trump wrote in the post. “THE DEMOCRATS HAVE TOTALLY WEAPONIZED LAW ENFORCEMENT IN OUR COUNTRY AND ARE VICIOUSLY USING THIS ABUSE OF POWER TO INTERFERE WITH OUR ALREADY UNDER SIEGE ELECTIONS!”

Trump’s comments echo similar statements made by top Republican leaders over the weekend, who suggested Congress should limit the funds that go toward the DOJ and FBI, arguing the government agencies have become politically “weaponized.”

“We control the power of the purse, and that’s — we’re gonna have to look at the appropriations process and limit funds going to some of these agencies, particularly the ones who are engaging in the most egregious behavior,” House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) told Fox News.

An outright push to defund the federal law enforcement agencies would be a long-shot bid in Congress, as it’s likely to receive pushback from several House Republicans as well as Democrats. Even if it did manage to pass the House, it’s unlikely to pass the Senate and would face an almost certain veto from President Joe Biden.

The calls to defund the DOJ and FBI, even just partially, come as Republicans have sought to criticize Democrats for “soft on crime” policies such as defunding the police. The comments also stand in contrast to GOP efforts to paint itself as the party of “law and order,” prompting criticism from some Democrats.

“As Donald Trump challenges the legitimacy of our criminal justice system, let us give him the equal protection and due process he’s deprived everyone he’s accused of a crime,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) tweeted. “Justice benefits all of us.”

This is a mixed message by Trump. "Democrats want to defund the police" is a powerful attack line and he's throwing it away out of anger.

He's got a stronger base of support than DeSantis, but this is not going to help with independents.

Its not a mixed message at all. NOT EVEN CLOSE

One is Fed.gov state-security org, similar to KGB, with extremely broad powers, no practical oversight, over which Americans have ZERO control, an agency which has grossly overstepped their bounds and violated the Constitution - even engaging in a coup

The other are local police forces, whose powers are strictly proscribed, subject to limited jurisdiction, over whom citizens still have a lot of control

Does it make sense why Obama and Holder created so much chaos on the streets, in order to remove any power from the latter, and give it all to the former?

I’m in total agreement. The DOJ is nothing but a persecution arm of the govt. They should not be allowed to investigate the states. They aren’t needed and it’s a waste of money. The FBI as well. It would be a great start.

well, appearantly Trump’s current criminal defense attorney Joe Tacopina went on TV a few years ago and spelled out Trump’s guilt in the Stormy Daniels case. Trump apparently didn’t know about it when he recently hired the guy.

so, no, he doesn’t think.

The liberals want to defund the agencies which are protecting communities from street criminals.

The Americans want to dismantle the agencies which are working for political criminals.

No one will believe that distinction. They’ll see it as Republican congress members and presidential candidates calling to defund police and no Democrat presidential candidates or congressmen doing it.

This is Politics 101. If you’re explaining, you’re losing.

I don’t think that Trump voters, or even average Americans are as STUPID as you guys think.

They know that Russiagate was AN ABUSE OF POWER, for which NO ONE has been held accountable. And about the only people left supporting the FBI are die-hard Democrats.

It’s really not very hard to see how WEAPONIZED the federal government is, even for people who think it’s fine, as long as it’s directed at Trump and his supporters.

Not necessarily. The key to our freedom is the local militia leader, otherwise known as the county sheriff, with the authority to organize and deputize citizens. County Sheriffs were entrusted with a lot more responsibility than people realize. The far left knows this and that is why over the years they have gradually usurped the sheriffs’ authority and have worked hard to make local police departments ever more dependent upon or beholden to the federal government for equipment, vehicles, expertise, lab research, training, union matters, civil rights mandates, etc. The more dependent your local police are on DC, the less they are subject to local authority, to you.

Obama and others have made no secret of this desire they have for generalizing police, for creating a national police force. They need a police force that is loyal only to the central government, for much the same reason communist Venezuelan presentment Hugo Chavez replaced Venezuelan police with Cubans. He could be certain the Cubans would be loyal to the Revolution. His own countrymen, not so much.

This a good opportunity to explain the difference between your local sheriff who answers to you, the local voter, and a bunch of Jack booted political hacks chosen by whoever controls Berlin, um, I mean, Washington DC...

It is not a mixed message. Law enforcement should be purely a local responsibility. The FBI should be completely and permanently defunded. If we cannot make this argument and succeed then there is no way to limit federal government power, reduce federal spending, balance the budget and most importantly eliminate the deep state.

Proof: Education should be purely a local responsibility. The federal Department of Education should be completely and permanently defunded.

You can replace Department of Education with the vast majority of federal agencies and/or programs. You can be a strong advocate for law enforcement, education and many other things but simultaneously call for their shuttering at the federal level. In fact, the strongest advocates can articulate many reasons why government is always more effective at the local level.

Only morons that can’t keep two ideas in their heads at the same time won’t understand this.

.
The Republicans let the FBi and DoJ pick a number out of the air for Massive Spending Increases - and Lindsey Graham said he supports that approach.

The DOE and the FBI have been around for decades, signed off personally by Reagan and Trump every year of their terms. No one will believe this argument except some libertarian ideologues.

It’s far wiser to talk about reforming and investigating FBI misconduct than this “defund” stuff. Democrats are terrified of being said to want to defund the police. Republicans will be soon as well.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) tweeted. “Justice benefits all of us.”

Not lately. The Department of it benefits strictly Democrats of late. And that's the problem.

What he should have done is oppose the new FBI headquarters. Then force the FBI budget down without talking about it.
