A North Carolina state Democratic House member switched parties Wednesday morning giving the GOP supermajority. While state Republicans had been holding out hope that Representative Tricia Cotham, who up until Wednesday morning was a registered Democrat, would switch parties that hope became a realistic idea last week. Now Republicans in the state legislation hold power despite opposition from NC Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.
WHAT HAPPENED?
State Representative Tricia Cotham, a previous Democrat from Charlotte, made the formal announcement she was switching parties Wednesday morning. This announcement gave Republicans, who were short of the majority by only one seat, the supermajority. The state Republicans had hoped Cotham would switch parties going into the legislative season, though it had only been a fever dream.
That was until last week when many insiders began seriously speculating the news. After Cotham skipped a vote for Democratic agenda and essentially handed Republicans a win, many began speculating Cotham’s motives. Her intent was revealed when she announced a “major announcement” press conference for Wednesday morning.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
The state’s Republicans had held majority in both the state’s House and Senate for decades. However, the threat of Democratic Governor Cooper had kept the party under his order.
With the newly founded supermajority the GOP will be able to more easily push long awaited legislation – such as abortion restrictions – without the governor dictating their legislation.
Updates :
Cotham’s press conference took place Wednesday morning at around 9am local time. At that time, she made her formal announcement to switch parties. Her announcement, Wednesday, followed Democrat House minority leader Rep. Robert Reives’ call Tuesday in which he demanded Cotham resign. Other Democrats have said they don’t blame her, and the Democrat reactions on her missed vote is most likely what led her to switch parties.
So how did that a-hole Cooper become Governor in state with a Republican super majority?
Hey, Senator Manchin. This is what real courage looks like, you putz.
they need to redraw congressional districts ASAP and fix all the election laws also, before doing ANYTHING else!
Very good. Now, GOP, do something with that power that helps your people.
“Very good. Now, GOP, do something with that power that helps your people.”
I laughed....
Yeah, I don’t really see Charlie Brown getting to kick that football.
Now fix voting in your state.
1) Start a new voter roll every 4 years
2) End motor voter
3) End absentee ballots for all but shut-ins and out of towners during the election week.
4) prohibit Dominion systems from the election cycle
I can’t wait for the whining of how unfair this is to the checks and balances that “Democracy” was founded upon; meanwhile here in Cali, the Dem. supermajority is seen as a precious miracle from which enlightenment will soon be attained for all…
By cheating
Any NC FReepers can tell us about her voting record?
