Putin 'to replace Wagner Group mercenaries amid ongoing power feud'

The Kremlin wants to replace the notorious Wagner Group with an alternative force Vladimir Putin can exert more influence over, reports say.

An apparent feud between Russia’s Military of Defence and the mercenary faction has reportedly led to Putin becoming paranoid about his own position.

The Russian president is reportedly fearful the Wagner Group has become too powerful amid rumours of a power struggle between key Russian officials.

However, no other known Russian group comes close to Wagner’s military size or combat power, the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

The British defence experts said the desire for a replacement group shows the Kremlin still wants to use mercenaries in Ukraine.

This is because they are less constrained by limited pay levels and the inefficiency that hampers Russia’s regular army.

The military leadership believe heavy casualties among a replacement group would also be more tolerated by Russian society, compared to regular military losses.

The Wagner Group – made up of ex-convicts – has played an important role in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Putin reportedly fears Prigozhin’s influence in Ukraine could soon outstrip his own and make him vulnerable if a leadership bid was launched.

Fears of a power struggle between Putin and Prigozhin may also explain the Kremlin’s determination to replace the Wagner Group.

While the group is notorious, feared and dangerous – it does not actually exist as a legal entity, and analysts are still debating how to define it.

It instead operates more like a network of different, overlapping groups in various parts of the world.

The group is seemingly run beyond the law in Russia and is linked to neo-Nazism and far-right extremism.

Operatives have committed war crimes in Ukraine and other locations, including rape and robbery of civilians as well as torturing accused deserters.

According to US and European officials, one of Putin’s closest allies is using dissent around the war in Ukraine to jockey for increased influence inside the Kremlin2. The Kremlin wants to replace the notorious Wagner Group with an alternative force Vladimir Putin can exert more influence over3. It seems that Putin is caught between his own military and his allies45.

Wagner Group is somewhat effective. But Putin is afraid of a coup. The Russian military is weak on purpose. So they can’t overthrow Putin. But Putin fails to conquer Ukraine. He can’t have it both ways.

You have that right. The Russian military is kept weak and 3rd tier on purpose by Putin and his gangsters. Then they expect it to perform mightily in Ukraine? Too funny!

Who really rules Russia are the FSB and other internal security forces. Under the direction and patronage of Vlad Putin. Vlad does consult with other top Kremlinites.

“”However, no other known Russian group comes close to Wagner’s military size or combat power, the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.”’

More evidence of the massive losses Russia has suffered and more evidence mocking the claims that Russia has been saving their best equipment and best units all these long months since reports started coming out that their best were dead and their best equipment destroyed.

Putin’s meatgrinder tactics are destroying a generation of Russian men
Story by Hamish de Bretton-Gordon • 18h ago

Vladimir Putin’s regime is in its death throes. His “special military operation”, far from disarming Ukraine, has only succeeded in disarming Russia. Moscow has lost over 220,000 soldiers to death or injury alongside 1,900 tanks. These are the sort of numbers we associate with the first world war; modern militaries are rarely built to handle such catastrophic losses.

Putin is paranoid of Yevgeny Prigozhin so he would rather lose the war in Ukraine than possibly have Wagner Mercenaries pose a threat to the current regime at the Kremlin.

Putin was selected to his position by the original Oligarch ‘crew’....mostly to allow their path to be unencumbered. Shortly after that, Putin created the 2nd layer of Oligarch folks (I think they are almost 100-percent former FSB/KGB individuals). The original Oligarch folks have marginal access to Putin today. Whether they regret their ‘pick’ is an unknown.

Meanwhile...Dmitry Utkin is beyond either Oligarch group and the FSB...heading up the Wagner group. It would be accurate to say that up until the last couple of months....as much as the Russian military thought they had big seat at the table with Putin...Utkin was Putin’s idea/bluff source.

Putin has taken so much advice, from so many sources...that a coherent plan is not possible, and a necessary end to the war cannot be achieved.

The only path ahead is to continue to bluff everyone into the belief that war is on the edge of turning around, and another mobilization will bring the right balance of manpower into being. Meanwhile, Putin waits for the next guy to jump out of a 8th story building, or another news media guy to be murdered in some burger-bar in Moscow.
