But for two pregnant women in New Jersey, the real-life repercussions of eating poppy seeds and then testing positive for drugs weren’t nearly as funny.
The women ate bagels with poppy seeds last year before heading to two separate hospitals to give birth to their children.
Hospital staff administered drug tests to both women — which came back positive for opioids, as a press release from the New Jersey ACLU indicated. The hospitals reported the women to the New Jersey Department of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP) for possible abuse and neglect.

In many states eating poppy seeds is a parole violation.
Has nothing to do with pregnancy.
Every time I was "surprise"-tested for drugs at work, I happened to have eaten 14 poppyseed rolls before-hand, thus always resulting in "positive" results.
Pure coincidence!
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
Regards,
That’s weird, because many people might not even know its’s on certain foods.
A very common story at that.
Good going there, geniuses.
What's worse, J. Peterman won't take them to Africa to knock off the Masai.
Like Seinfeld.
Seinfeld taught me to avoid poppy seeds.
IIRC-—Same thing happened to a female LAPD office some years ago.
They did NOT test positive for drugs. The test detects poppy seeds. The test is not for drugs. Their rights were violated and they were falsely accused.
If there were no fascists in control, at the very least, another more reliable test needed to be given.
The hospital probably used old tests.
I understand they have raised the sensitivity of the tests to account for eating poppy seeds.
Or maybe they had opiods, then ate poppy seeds to cover it up?
Twenty years ago one of my guys got busted on a drug test because he had eaten a poppy seed bagel. It was well known that this would happen at least as far back as the early nineties.
Yeah, that’s a likely story.
My first thought was these pregnant women have apparently never watched Seinfeld haha
Excerpt:
“No one should be subjected to unnecessary and nonconsensual drug tests,” said ACLU-NJ staff attorney Molly Linhorst in a press release.
“Our clients are sending a clear message to hospitals that these testing and reporting policies are unacceptable.”
She also said, “Discriminatory testing policies like these upend what should be a time of joy for families, and so often subject them to further trauma and unwarranted investigation by the state.”

I imagine they test all mothers, as it is good healthcare to be aware of the drugs the child is and has been exposed to or is being born addicted to.
Hardly unnecessary.
It is what it is, poppy seeds contain opiates.
