Thing is, when the Soviets ran the show, the leader wasn’t the actual leader. He had a cadre of people behind him who could remove him from power. Khrushchev was removed. There is no such power structure behind Putin.

After Stalin, the Soviets were pretty rational. They were tough but at the same time they didn't want to get nuked. We can't say the same about Putin.
