TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Senate on Thursday gave final approval to a bill that would allow people to carry guns without concealed-weapons licenses, sending the issue to Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The Republican-controlled Senate voted 27-13 almost almost straight party lines to pass the measure (HB 543), with Sen. Ileana Garcia, R-Miami, joining Democrats in opposition. The House approved the bill last week, and DeSantis has pledged to sign it.
In nixing a decades-old licensing requirement, the bill would allow people to carry concealed weapons without having to meet requirements such as firearms training and background screening. People carrying weapons would be required to have valid identification and be able to "display such identification upon demand by a law enforcement officer."
Many supporters labeled the measure "constitutional carry," in reference to Second Amendment constitutional rights. Sen. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, cited the Constitution during debate Thursday.
"The Second Amendment of the Constitution gives its people the right to keep and bear arms. It doesn’t say, ‘if you have a permit,’ it doesn’t say ‘if you’ve gone through training,’ it doesn’t say ‘if you’ve done a background check,’" Boyd said.
But some gun-rights advocates have disputed the constitutional carry label. They have argued the measure should have sought to allow what’s known as open carry — which would not require firearms to be concealed.
"This bill is a half-measure and is not what gun owners were promised. It isn't true constitutional carry because it doesn't include an open carry provision. This bill is weak and failed leadership on part of Gov. DeSantis and the Republican legislative leadership. Gun owners deserve better," Matt Collins, a former gun lobbyist who lives in Central Florida, said in a statement.

Just how does this bill impact the purchase of a firearm ?
With more citizens able to conceal carry crime will go down as armed robbery becomes too risky.
I do not believe that it does.
Two words....GREAT!
Always carry a weapon...always.
What needs to be done to protect the 2nd Amendment is to abolish ALL arms laws. Then only the Constitution remains.
Does nothing, living in Florida, I have my concealed carry license, under the old law, you have to attend a class about firearms, fire on round from a gun, take a test, get fingerprinted and take a photo, fill out the paperwork and send it to Tallahassee, and wait for several weeks to get your license.
Now all that goes away, if you are a law-abiding citizen, you can buy a firearm and carry it legally without having to get a license.
It still has to be concealed, the legislature in Florida turned down open carry, personally I would not carry openly but that’s a personal choice, last week I was in a restaurant in a very rural area of Florida, some guys came in from hunting turkeys, one guy had a sidearm openly carrying and no one said anything, it was cool to see.

Yes Joma89!
And ALWAYS back into a parking space.
And ALWAYS sit with your back to a wall, while facing the entrance.
And ALWAYS note the nearest exit, when you enter.
And ALWAYS TRUST GOD FOR ALL THINGS (this is the hardest one)
In Florida where no permit is needed to buy a handgun it should have no impact. Unlike states like NY where a permit is needed to even own a handgun.
Because you never know when a tranny will get upset over their correct gender.
Senator Garcia is going to be job searching soon.

Q. How do you eat an elephant?
A. One bite at a time.
I didn't see nuttin'!
If you intend to carry outside FL… you still need a FL license
Open carry is vulgar. It should be legal but I think a little discretion is appropriate. Strolling into public places flashing a gun freaks people out unnecessarily IMHO.

Florida has a three day waiting period if you do not have a concealed carry permit. That’s is the issue, does the new law revoke that three day wait.

Only said by liberal minded people. Fear drives liberals, not facts.
Fact is in every place open carry is allowed, no one gives a damn. In fact, fact, not fear, fact, people feel a little safer knowing others are willing to help protect them.
