Finnish politics could see a dramatic shift to the far right in elections on Sunday as an anti-immigration party aims to replace "rock star" Prime Minister Sanna Marin's Social Democrats.
The mother-of-one, who took office in 2019 as the world's youngest prime minister at age 34, is Finland's most popular prime minister this century, polls show. But the latest polls on Thursday put her centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) in third place, behind the anti-immigration and nationalist Finns Party and the centre-right National Coalition, which held on to a thin lead.
"It is a very exciting situation and it's hard to say at the moment which party will be the biggest on election day," Tuomo Turja of the polling firm Taloustutkimus told AFP.
A top spot for the far-right Finns Party, and a far-right prime minister, would be a first in Finland -- though the party has previously served in government. It currently looks set to top its record 19 percent from the 2011 election.
Traditionally, the biggest of the eight main parties in parliament claims the top post and tries to build a government. Marin leads a centre-left coalition of Social Democrats, the Centre, the Greens, the Left Alliance and the Swedish People's Party of Finland.
While some view her as a strong leader who skilfully navigated the Covid-19 pandemic and the country's NATO membership process, others say her partying scandals and youthful behaviour make her unfit for office.
"Sanna Marin is a polarising character. She has fans like a rock star, but on the other hand, she has a lot of people who can't stand her," Marko Junkkari, a journalist at daily Helsingin Sanomat, told AFP.

One party (Finns) is characterized as “far right”. Then the “National Coalition is characterized a “center-right” which usually means slightly left.
The “centrist/left” is ALL well to the left on any same person’s spectrum. Look at the party names: Social Democrat (both leftist adjectives), the “Center”, the Greens, the Left Alliance, and then the “Swedish Peoples Party of Finland” (Let’s all start singing the Internationale now).
Anything that isn’t barking moonbat left is now considered “far-right”. It’s such a distortion, and so few young folks recognize it!

Speaking of “far right”, the Finnish PM attended the funeral of Dmytro Kotsiubaylo in Kiev. He was commander of a Right Sector neo-Nazi Banderist militia formation called “The DaVinci Wolves”. Lots of Banderist flags at that funeral and other disturbing symbols.
(Yes, I know the left has long claimed the Nazis and their fellow travellers were “far right” when in reality they were just to to the right of the commies. After all, Nazi = Nationalsozialismus. But they’ve got away with it for so long it’s now “common knowledge” that Nazis and their ilk are “far right”.)
Anyway, from a post I started but never finished in reply to this thread about poser, serial liar and shameless grifter James Vasquez, who claimed to be fighting with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but who actually hung out in fancy hotels in Kiev drinking and gambling, sometimes tagging along after real fighters and making videos of the aftermath for his social media accounts and telling tall tales. He was recently busted for his lies and deleted his Twitter account:

Vasquez claimed on Twitter about a month ago that he was being sent to Bakhmut. So much for OPSEC, eh? Then, a few days later, he was in Kiev posting a photo of a DaVinci Wolves patch on the shoulder of his uniform, which is a Right Sector group of fighters (not fully integrated into the UAF, as I understand it, but officially recognized). Which caused someone to reply to that Tweet thusly:
