NEW YORK (AP) — As Hollywood emerged from the pandemic, its biggest film productions dipped in diversity after years of incremental progress, according to a new study by UCLA researchers. Opportunities were notably greater for women and people of color on streaming platforms than in theatrically released films.
The annual UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, published Thursday, presented one of the most detailed looks yet at how the film industry was shaped and, in many ways, set back during the pandemic. In analyzing 2022 movie releases, academics found that ethnic and gender inclusivity in theatrical films reverted back to 2019 or 2018 levels in many metrics, turning charts downward that had been slowly trending toward greater equity on screen and behind the camera.
As the film industry sought to claw back moviegoers in 2022, it did so by leaning more on films starring and directed by white men, despite considerable evidence that more diverse films attract larger audiences. Black, Latino and Asian American moviegoers make up nearly half of all frequent moviegoers, and for the biggest hits, often account for the majority of ticket buyers.
“It definitely was not an industry that was back all the way. But I really think it gives a picture of a two-tiered system that’s been created,” says Ana-Christina Ramón, director of the Entertainment and Media Research Initiative at UCLA, which produces the report. “What will be interesting to see is what happens in 2023 if it continues to have this bifurcation.”
“The fear is that diversity is something is temporary or could be easily cut at any point in either theatrical or streaming,” says Ramón, noting that streaming services, after years of torrid growth, are now pulling back on original productions.

I have wondered about that. In watching TV advertisements it seems the percentage of black actors is well above percent of the published population - 13% - ditto that for movies on screen and TV.
My father in law and I made the same observation on Thanksgiving when we were watching the NFL games on one of the networks. Every commercial was a minority person. Bonus points for gay minority person.
I just watched the movie The Dark Knight for the first time.
It had a bunch of GREAT actors in it:
Christian Bale (British White guy)
Michael Caine (British white guy)
Heath Ledger (dead American white guy)
Morgan Freeman(African American guy)
Cillian Murphy (Irish White guy)
Gary Oldman (British White guy)
Matthew Modine (American white guy)
Eric Roberts (American white guy)
Maggie Gyllenhaal (American White girl)
The fact is that Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Micheal Caine are the best actors of our time.
It just happens that 3 out of 4 are British and White.
Heath Ledger stole the show in his portrayal of The Joker.

I watched a couple of movies for the first time in years a couple nights ago. I was taken aback how juvenile and unbelievable they were. 90% of them all the play actors did was talk and pose for the cameras...It was soap opera like. What an utter waste of my time that was.

Tom Cruise’s movie, Top Gun: Maverick was the lifeline movie theatres needed after COVID. Unfortunately, it’s been crap since then. Saw Otto with Hanks and that sucked. No desire to see Avatar.
You bring up an interesting observation. I think it comes from the history of slavery, and more recently the memory of Jim Crow that has liberal Hollywood carrying guilt around like a millstone. They need to just let it go. We’re a majority white nation, it’s okay to accommodate the culture of white audiences predominately.
Entertainment companies in countries across the globe accommodate their dominant culture; and more importantly, their audiences expect to see their own in commercials, movies etc. That’s okay. It’s normal, people feel comfortable around folks that look and speak like themselves. It doesn’t mean they’re racists.
So, Hollywood leave your white guilt obsession at home. You don’t need to constantly force feed audiences other cultures; purge your guilt on your own time.

Disney is dead because of how much they sucked up to the woke crowd. Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars are racing to even lower audiences.
John Wick 4 is making way more money than estimated.
