Orthodox monks who've been ordered out of a monastery in Kyiv refused to leave on Wednesday, as a deadline to vacate the complex expired.
The dispute over the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, Ukraine's most revered Orthodox site, is part of a wider religious conflict playing out in parallel with the war.
The monks using the property belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has been accused of links to Russia.
But the site is owned by the Ukrainian government, and the agency overseeing the property notified the UOC earlier this month that, as of March 29, it was terminating the lease.

Q. What do you call a tyrant who bans a 1000+ year church and confiscates its property?
A. Fighting for democracy bro
Zelensky is part of the western globo-homo, neo-marxist cultural revolution
He’s just doing what revolutionaries do.
Lies of omission.
Your article fails to provide the full name of the church the monks belong to: Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate or the UOC-MP.
It is a branch of the official state church of Russia which is run by a former KGB agent buddy of Putin.
The monks are justifiably considered a security threat since they are operatives of a government that is currently waging war against Ukraine.
That they are merely being evicted and sent back to Russia is quite charitable of the Ukrainians.
You are an anti-Christian bigot if you condone this.
Are they like the Tibetan monks that AlGore used to launder $$$?
A2.) Democrat?
“Lies of omission.”
When all you’ve got is spin, you’ve got to keep on spinning.
What a disgusting man Zelinski is. He’s pretending it’s a military necessity, but it’s just part of his ongoing ethnic cleansing effort.
People don’t seem to be aware of the nature of the Orthodox churches.
The Roman Catholic Church was mostly independent of the State. Yes, in many nations the Catholic was the state church. Just like after the reformation there were states where a Lutheran or Presbyterian church was the state church.
But in none of these was the church answerable to the state.
That was never the case in the east. The orthodox churches were always subordinate to the state. To the Eastern Empire, and then to the Tsars.
Note that the grounds of the monestary are actually owned by the state. This would never be the case in the West.
The relationship between Church and State is very different than what we are used to in the West.
It is a monastery and has been there for centuries. It is a monastery in the truest sense of the word and is not a military asset, nor a spying operation.
The worst they are doing is praying.
It’s KEEEEEEEEVE!
“..they are operatives of a government that is currently waging war against Ukraine...”
Maybe they are operatives of the Kingdom of God that is constantly waging war against evil.
pooty poot can find a nice place for them
Well, I guess that makes it all OK.
Zelensky will probably have his people blow the place up and then blame it on a Russian missile...similar to their usual playbook.
Shouldn’t Prez Z be out hocking his girls for more ammo instead of worrying about a bunch of KGB monks?
Woncha wanna keep ‘em locked up in the monetary then??
