New York imposes the most burdensome taxes on its residents of all the country’s 50 states, according to a new study.

WalletHub compared the 50 states in terms of their property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes in order to calculate their “overall tax burden,” or the proportion of total personal income that residents pay toward state and local taxes. […]

Overall, Democrat-led blue states finished with an average rank of 19.68 on the list of 50 states compared to 31.32 for Republican-led red states, indicating the former had significantly higher tax burdens. States were designated red or blue based on how they voted in the 2020 presidential election.

WalletHub’s report came out three weeks before Tax Day on April 18, when Americans’ income tax returns are due to be submitted to the federal government.

Beyond the additional financial burden on individuals and families that state taxes present, they also raise the question of how those state taxes affect economic growth for residents. …

New York “leads” at all the wrong things, like the most people hightailing it out of the state.

Maybe that’s why the folks in California keep coming up with these tax burdens like reparations so they can topple New York from that title.

CA was ranked #10 for worse taxes, but we are probably #1 for crumbling infrastructure. We know we are #1 for welfare and Medicaid clients as well as #1 for illegals.

El Camino Real on the SF Peninsula is 40 miles of deep, tire-gashing potholes. We get to play Dodge ‘Em on ECR all the time.

Then there they gasoline car bans, the gas furnace and stove bans, and the Multi-Zillion Dollar give-aways to anybody with one drop of black blood.

CA is such a pathetic joke.

Old saying still true “another reason to hate New York City.”

(there’s also “one more reason to hate California” which used to be used in TV ads, kiddingly.

At this point, how can one tell legitimate votes from illegitimate?

Take Fun City outta the mix and NY prolly wouldn’t fare too badly.

NY city controls and distorts literally everything in NY State Government and politics.

100+ years ago, the state and NY city developed equally. Now its become a completely lopsided relationship. Upstate NY has turned into a cross between Appalachia and East Germany

I worked in NYC 1974-80. When my job moved out of state, it was a relief to no longer pay NY state income and sales tax plus NYC income and sales tax. A quadruple whammy!

And it gets even more silly when you include the taxes on utilities - the ones on the bill, and the ones the utilities are forbidden from posting on the bill.

Many municipalities in the state require what are effectively kickbacks in the form of property taxes which are several times the value of a property, and any rate increase is accompanied by the local and state governments taking their cut on top of normal taxes.

“NY city controls and distorts literally everything in NY State Government and politics.”

I was born in White Plains in 1951 and we soon moved upstate. I remember when I was about 10 or 11 in Ithaca, dad and his buddies always complained about high taxes and NYC bleeding the state dry. Yes, back in 1961! That was probably my first “political” memory.

One of dad’s good friends lived on Texas Lane in Ithaca. His mailbox sign said “15 Taxes Lane.” I went up to him and proudly said “You misspelled ‘Texas’ on your mailbox.” All the men laughed uproariously at the dumb kid (who wasn’t paying taxes). It’s funny I still remember that 60 years later!

Yup on top of everything else NYC has taxes specific to those who work within the city. But property taxes are still crazy throughout the state.

“Take Fun City outta the mix and NY prolly wouldn’t fare too badly.”
That’s the problem with the country. If we remove those “blue” sections of the voting map, we are left with the vast majority of the country’s area (and productivity) and good people, and have removed only the corrupt, worthless, and putrid mostly DemocRAT run cities. Hmmm...a thought occurs......
