This reminds me of the natives of Easter island.
Some calamity caused the natives to build huge statues of their ancestors or gods.
When this failed to alleviate their difficulty,they built more and bigger statues.
What they didn’t realize was the forest which provided the wood to move the moai or statues also fed their people and built their boats to reach the large fish offshore.
The tribes fell into warfare and even cannibalism until only a remnant remained when white men arrived
