I take the exact opposite approach. I will not do the “math”. I will not do the “automatic transposition” from male to female or from female to male. When I read it, I stop right there and think “Not a she. A He.”

The killer was a woman pretending to be a man and undoubtedly taking male hormones, a “trans man.” The media is using female pronouns to describe it. They will flip their own narrative to serve the agenda of the moment. “Misgendering” is just fine in this instance.
