GREENWOOD — The City of Greenwood took time this week to honor the man responsible for stopping the gunman inside the Greenwood Park Mall in July.

Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers chose Elisjsha Dicken as the 2022 recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award for the city.

In his nomination letter, Myers recounted what occurred on July 17 inside the mall and shared thanks for the fast action of Dicken.

“July 17th started off to be another beautiful day in Greenwood. Unfortunately, it became one of the darkest days in our history. A lone gunman entered the Food Court in the Greenwood Park Mall. As he emerged from the restroom he began firing a rifle, killing 3 people.

Hearing shots ring out, Elisjsha Dicken immediately identified the shooter, took cover behind a pillar, drew his weapon and fired at the shooter from 40 yards away. He was able to eliminate the threat. While doing this Elisjsha also was waving innocent civilians to safety. There were countless number of innocent lives saved that day due to his quick and selfless thinking. The City of Greenwood and the residents here owe a great debt of gratitude to Elisjsha.

Because of his heroic actions the City of Greenwood proudly honors Elisjsha Dicken as the 2022 Citizen of the Year.”

We need to recognize heros such as Eli Dickens in our society, rather than destroy them, as the FBI did to Richard Jewell.

Good news from Greenwood. Mayor Myers made a good choice.

Great choice. The young man deserves it. Since this happened I’ve tried a 40 yard shot several times. Even braced, it’s not an easy thing.

At least the FBI has not stepped up to ruin Eli’s life... yet.

It’s good to give this recognition to this man.

And this incident is a good example of how shooters can be stopped. The liberal view is that we never see a good guy with a gun stop a bad guy with a gun. This event disproves that liberal canard.

*APPLAUSE*

In a SANE WORLD, this WOULD be commonplace. I agree; he is a HERO! God Bless Him!

You’re right. Anyone who can hit a human sized target at 40 yards with a handgun while under the pressure of a crisis situation is a very cool and skilled operator. He deserves recognition for his heroic action.

Your comment reminded me again, it doesn't take much, of the Good Samaritan killed by Officer Kraig Brownlow of the Arvada Colorado police.

Quote from insider.com:

"Johnny Hurley, using his concealed-carry pistol, shot an active shooter named Ronald Troyke on June 21, 2021, after Troyke opened fire in a Colorado shopping and entertainment district and killed police officer Gordon Beesley. According to the lawsuit and Colorado authorities, Hurley then picked up the (sic) Troyke's rifle to remove the magazine. But when an Arvada police officer saw Hurley holding the rifle, the officer fatally shot Hurley from behind without warning."

The mother of the unfortunate hero is suing the cop and the police chief. There were three APD cowards hiding in the building during Hurley's heroic defense. May God bless the lawsuit by his mother, Kathleen Boleyn.

Need. Need is the key, bringing in a level of focus not otherwise casually attainable. It's all about something that you want, you need, you have to accomplish, more than anything else in the world right in that moment. Some people are susceptible, or capable of it, more than many others. I recall the story of one of the soldiers captured twenty years ago during Operation Iraqi Freedom, nerdy-looking kid with glasses who stunk at official marksmanship, but was deadly (between clearing regular weapon malfunctions) until capture. Skill sets can manifest and take over in people you would least expect it from. Seen it time and again.
