Bruce Springsteen, Gladys Knight, and José Feliciano have been announced as recipients of the National Medals of Arts, according to a White House press release. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will award them the trophies tomorrow (March 21) at 4:30 p.m. Eastern at the White House alongside fellow recipients Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mindy Kaling, and Vera Wang, among others. The event will be livestreamed at the White House’s website.
“The National Medal of Arts recipients have helped to define and enrich our nation’s cultural legacy through their life long passionate commitment,” said National Endowment for the Arts chair Maria Rosario Jackson. “We are a better nation because of their contributions. Their work helps us see the world in different ways. It inspires us to reach our full potential and recognize our common humanity. I join the President in congratulating and thanking them.”
Also receiving 2021 National Medals of Arts are Judith Francisca Baca, Fred Eychaner, Antonio Martorell-Cardona, Joan Shigekawa, the Billie Holiday Theatre, and the International Association of Blacks in Dance.
Last year, Gladys Knight was an honoree at the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements. Back in 2016, Springsteen received a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Barack Obama.
Where is Meatloaf? Two out of three? No, one only—Gladys.
“Born in the USA” is not a patriotic song.
My suggestion for America’s Three Tenors: Eddie Veder, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young (yeah, I know hes Canadian, but he has got that same voice. What a treat.
Sounds like Barry Soetoro has been putting some pressure on the Demented One to get these three of his pals participation medals.
From FDR to DNR, we’ve come a long way, baby.
I had no idea Jose feliciano was still alive.
I have two better choices who could carry a tune. Gladys was OK.
Bruce Springsteen is the worst, without a doubt the worst singer of all time.
His songs suck wet dog fur.
The guy and his band were great in the Philly Night Clubs, and the doc on Chuck Berry where his little band plays their heart out, backing up for him is priceless, (Berry, jilts them out of a $1000 bonus.
But, I f*rt in key better than he does.
In the end, it’s all political. You’re a democrat you get a medal.
I can appreciate art for art’s sake. I don’t have to agree with the artist politically nor do I have to respect him/her outside of their music. That is certainly the case for me with Bruce Sringsteen. For the past 35 years he has just become full of himself and I stopped going to his concerts as I no longer found it worth my time to sit through his pedantic left wing rants in order to hear songs like Thunder Road or Rosalita or Born to Run.
That said, I really like Springsteen’s early (pre 1984) music. He had a way of describing life in New Jersey the 70s from a blue collar perspective that very few artists ever could. At this time, his lyrics were not political. His biggest strength IMO was his song writing. His concerts were over 3 hours and he gave 110% each time. The E street band was outstanding as well and each were accomplished musicians in their own right.
Then somewhere mid-late 80s he decided to become bigger than his music and turned into a left wing shill. And his music suffered. And I jumped off the bandwagon as it was obvious every song from that point on was written to convey a left wing message. But still to this day I will on rare occasion put on an earlier album and emerce myself in the music.
Prisoners at least lend the IHOP a little class.
