John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council at the White House, has stated that depleted uranium rounds are a common type of munition, and that Russia's claims that they are a step toward escalation are groundless.
Source: Kirby, during a briefing on 22 March, reported by European Pravda
The White House representative said that the United States is not providing Ukraine with depleted uranium munitions.
"There have been health studies done on depleted uranium munitions, it is not a radioactive threat, it is not anywhere close to going into the nuclear realm. This is a commonplace type of munition that is used particularly for its armour-piercing capabilities," he emphasised.
"If Russia is deeply concerned about the welfare of their tanks and tank soldiers, the safest thing for them to do is move them across the border, get them out of Ukraine," Kirby added.
Background: On Monday, the UK confirmed that it will supply Ukraine with depleted uranium rounds. Russian President Vladimir Putin later criticised the decision, falsely claiming that it was a weapon with a "nuclear component".
Depleted uranium is a waste product of the uranium enrichment process, which involves the separation of the uranium-235 isotope from natural uranium. Due to its high density, depleted uranium is also used in the armour of military vehicles (in particular, M1 Abrams tanks) and armour-piercing rounds.
NATO countries are known to have used munitions containing depleted uranium during the Kosovo operation, which is why they were accused of increasing the incidence of leukaemia.
However, according to experts, such rounds existed in the Soviet Union, and Russian troops have already used them in Ukraine during the full-scale war. In addition, there is no reason to believe that depleted uranium is related to nuclear weapons, as Putin has claimed.
My senior class advisor in ROTC was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam, and died from cancer about 15 years ago. He was a fantastic officer and a great man.
Trashing Russian armor since 1991.
Is it just me or does anyone else think that being on the receiving end of a high density, depleted uranium artillery or tank round is much more hazardous to your health than any long term risk should you happen to survive?
Such a divergence. I read this and just see a swarmy coward on our side. It only makes me side with Russia more.
And after dealing with the hidden Stasi-like domestic surveillance in the US due to my political activism online for conservatism, I was already viewing “our” side as quite the enemy.
I had a football coach who went through shell shock in Nam. He regained his balance pretty quick, and a hearing aid solved the rest the problem. He didn’t complain.
Quite correct!
When a woman being attacked by a rapist knees the rapist in the groin, that isn't an "escalation."
That is "self-defense."
Regards,
If reports are all false and that **** doesn’t cause cancers and birth defects, then Brits and Americans should invite Russians to blow some of that ammo off against some steel armor plate in London and DC...
This is the same simple minded pap we get from every simple minded neocon (foreign and domestic) here, daily.
That article from the radical left source you prefer to use against America and our military is claimed about any and all pollutants from the American military.
Here is the source.

“The Intercept is a left wing news website financially supported by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. It was co-founded in 2014 by left wing journalist Jeremy Scahill, lawyer and journalist Glenn Greenwald, and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras.”

“”This is the same simple minded pap we get from every simple minded neocon (foreign and domestic) here, daily.””
Yours is a radical Kremlin position against America and NATO policy, the U.N. and the formal position of 141 of the world’s nations.
Your radical Kremlin position won the support of only 7 nations, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Syria, Russia, Mali and Nicaragua.
As it is they will be used by Ukraine, within Ukraine.
Shells that the Russians also have, for use in Ukraine.
“That teenage girl worthy snark is what we get today from a retired US Navy Admiral. Our pussified military at it again.”
Aside from your childish anti-woman language, it is the same position America would have expressed at its strongest during history, “get-out if you fear for your invading army”.
Depleted uranium is U238, and is only very slightly radioactive. There are potassium isotopes that are more radioactive.
But it’s still a heavy metal, like arsenic or lead or cadmium or mercury, and chemically it’s still very toxic.
You certainly are missing the information in the article which explains the damage these weapons have caused to children.
I’m very familiar with the Intercept. I’d hardly call them far left although they certainly screwed over Greenwald.
The information holds true, regardless of the source.
The leftist publication you are promoting is talking about all pollutants around military bases and operations, it is, and has been, a staple of the left.
Col. Macgregor puts to rest the Russian propaganda about the depleted uranium rounds.
Macgregor: “it’s very good it’s very effective I could attest to that personally and as far as I can tell no one has contracted cancer from being near it around it or having used it
and I certainly loaded rounds and it’s been a great deal of time around it and I was also on the battlefield where we fought after the war and saw evidence for the damage that inflicted
I don’t know what President Putin’s information is and the Russians are pretty sober minded and normally I think if they knew what they were dealing with they would not make these comments suggesting that this had quote unquote nuclear implications but perhaps they’ve decided that this has some propaganda value that that harms us in the public eye I have no idea.”
Ahh I missed that. Sorry. Not my intention.
Thanks.
BTW........ there is a report today that Ukranian pilots are in fact training on A 10's that shoot the uranium tank destroying 30 mm bullets
