EXCLUSIVE: Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis will headline the Heritage Foundation’s 50th leadership summit in April after skipping the annual Conservative Political Action Conference attended by former President Donald Trump earlier this month.

DeSantis, who pundits widely expect to launch a White House bid later this year but who currently remains on the 2024 sidelines, will deliver a "major policy speech" concluding Heritage’s two-day annual summit on April 21 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, according to a press release by Heritage.

"Conservatives are craving a bold and visionary leader who gets things done — and that’s exactly what Gov. Ron DeSantis has accomplished in Florida," Heritage President Kevin Roberts said in a statement.

Not everyone who supports Trump is a “cultist”. But for many, their support for Trump definitely takes on a religious fervor, and anyone who disagrees with them is treated as a heretic. These are the ones who openly declare that if Trump is not the nominee, they will not vote for the GOP candidate, then turn around and demand that everyone else vow to support Trump is he is the nominee. They are the ones who insist that our country will not survive another Democrat president (I tend to agree), but then say they will stay home or write Trump in if he is not the nominee, assuring a Democrat win. These are the ones who declare anyone that is not 100% pro-Trump is a RINO, GOPe, squish (and those are the nice things they say), and then don’t understand why they are not winning over new voters…

What impresses me so far about Ron is what he has actually accomplished as governor. He focuses on battles he can win and make a difference for the people in his state. As I said before, if he runs for president (highly likely) and starts talking about what he wants to accomplish at the federal level, I’ll decide if I think his goals are realistic or just empty campaign promises. Still very early in the process.

DeSantis needs to focus on policy statements and avoid gratuitously insulting Trump as he did in his recent counterproductively-worded statement.

Trump and DeSantis need to stop insulting each other, which is boring and time-wasting, and focus on policies.

No worries, save the money my good FRiend. Your library can lend you a copy.

You might learn quite a bit about the man and what he's accomplished so far in his life, what he thinks of our fine Country and our traditions, our fragile freedoms, and other insights into the man's beliefs and goals.

BTW, in the book, he discusses his time as a Member of the House, and RDS' opinion of the GOP elite is inline with those of us FReepers.

Well said. Now let us review some history
- Bush 1 - Read My lips No New Taxes - that did not age well
- Bush 2 - no win war in IRAQ, Afghanistan - almost liked war as much as LBJ - just another Texas Dem.
- The most famous Senator from Arizona, he was a great friend of OBAMA - not sure why he even ran as an R. - can you elucidate on this one?
- Romney - between him and the other Mormon, the one from Arizonam you remeber the Dem Speaker of the House, the one before Nanci - why vote for an R?

Possibly you have no issues with the gopE or Dem Uniparty, possibly you know no history and are happy to relive it?

Bullseye! 30 years ago, maybe, back at least when Heritage was formed, a friend said it’s a great outfit and I ought to join and contribute. I demurred, figuring I’d watch ‘em a while and see what kind of good works they accomplish. In those 30 years I’ve never heard of anything they’ve done besides soliciting more money and bloviating about how great they are. Your remarks encapsulated my feelings about them in fewer words. Shakespeare was right: Brevity is the soul of wit. Thanks.

Who decides what is or isn’t a “major” speech?

Murdoch, Fox, Ryan, Rove, all of GOPe Inc.

I’ve been on this forum almost as long as you have. And circular firing squads, particularly ones this far ahead in the game, only serve to weaken us and embolden the enemy.

being “conservative” has nothing to do with actual policies or actions. The only thing that matters is unquestioning and unshakable loyalty to Trump.”

You have it ass backwards. What matters is Trump’s unquestioning and unshakable loyalty to regular blue collar Americans. Ron the Yale lawyer golden boy, Knights of Malta member is suspect. He likes photos with Jeb and Paul Ryan.

What is your point? gopE or die or make America great again?

We do have a long history of Rs, Bush II gave us Chief Pirate Robertson (Obamacare is a not a TAX) - Trump gave us THREE Constitutionalist on the court
- what firing squad are you referring to? I provide specifics and all I get in return are polemics - you people need to do better then used car salesmen

DeSantis should continue to fight the issues and avoid the circular firing squad.

There's a lot wrong in the Republican party, no doubt about that. And we've been betrayed more time than I care to remember, yes, that's right. So let's do better. Simple, right? If only that were so.

You're just looking for an argument, and I don't have the time or inclination to give it to you. If you've got all that energy -- go expend it at the political left, the real adversaries.

At some point you need to look in the mirror - who will you support the next Romney (Ron D) or someone who does have a track record with the Big Dogs.

No idea what state you live in so who your senators are - here in Texas we have a Romney double in Johny Wayne McCornyn a gopE Uniparty monster - no, Rs do not appear to be doing any better. The same applies to our Governor and the Texas House Majority leader - WHO has appointed Seven Ds. to chair Texas House committees.

You need to look in the mirror - Rs are a real disappointment

I don’t know. There is someone here, I can’t member who, who keeps posting that I’m wrong about the law. Hmmm..... I heard it from a lawyer on TV and read a statement from someone in the FLA legislature. Either way, he hasn’t declared and the law may or may not get passed.

Yeah, read my tag line. Ron DeSantis is a conservative. Most importantly, he's fighting conservative battles and winning them.

You can call Trump a nationalist. You can call him a populist. But don't call him a conservative because he isn't one. There's nothing conservative about banning guns, mailing everyone Covid stimulus checks, endorsing Stacey Abrams for governor, and, well, paying hush money to porn stars.

Now go back and look at who each of those candidates ran against. Were they better or worse for the country than their opponent? Do you really think we would have been better off after 9-11 with Gore as president? Or better with Dukakis or Kerry? Do you think McCain or Romney would have done more damage than Obama did?

All of them had flaws, and failed in many ways, but were better choices than the Dems. You fight like hell to get the nominee of your choice, but if you don’t, you vote for the best option left available. You don’t go 3rd party and you don’t take your ball and go home, because that is just giving the country over to the Left without a fight.
