EXCLUSIVE: Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis will headline the Heritage Foundation’s 50th leadership summit in April after skipping the annual Conservative Political Action Conference attended by former President Donald Trump earlier this month.

DeSantis, who pundits widely expect to launch a White House bid later this year but who currently remains on the 2024 sidelines, will deliver a "major policy speech" concluding Heritage’s two-day annual summit on April 21 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, according to a press release by Heritage.

"Conservatives are craving a bold and visionary leader who gets things done — and that’s exactly what Gov. Ron DeSantis has accomplished in Florida," Heritage President Kevin Roberts said in a statement.

Unfortunately for you (excluding Adorno) and our country DeSantis squandered an important opportunity. Unlike DeSantis, Cruz was spot on.

“Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) slammed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's “political persecution” of former President Donald Trump as “utter and complete crap.”

“The case from the Manhattan District Attorney, if they bring an indictment and charge him, is utter and complete crap…It is flimsy. It is weak,” Cruz said on his latest Verdict podcast episode. “It has been rejected by prosecutor after prosecutor after prosecutor. And it is obviously political retribution and a political persecution.

“[Bragg] hates Donald Trump. Now he has a right to hate Donald Trump. But he doesn't have a right to abuse and corrupt the justice system to persecute his political opponents. And that, sadly, is exactly what he's doing here,” the Texas senator continued.”

This country's legal system has been weaponized. Leaders must speak forcefully. Senator Rand Paul also did an excellent job today.

I’m not from New York and am unfamiliar with the quaint idioms of that far-left looney bin — but I’m pretty sure “DeSanctominious” isn’t a term of endearment in Queens. Or probably anywhere in the five boroughs.

It might even be a “snide remark.”

If the Florida governor’s name is not Donald Trump, then Ron DeSantis is opposed by just about all of the loud Freepers here.

Spirited debate? It's a good thing as long as we FReepers keep in mind that we are not each other's enemy. Personally, I think it's best to avoid a "bromance" with any candidate and also to bear in mind that many (not all) candidates are good, solid Conservatives.

I would love it if folks (even GOP candidates) realized that we are all on the same Conservative team (we only differ on who should be our quarterback for the general election.)

Agree, this is about Trump but it is much bigger than Trump and DeSantis had an opportunity to take it as seriously as I do when Leftist DA's an AG's use taxpayer funds to persecute political opponents. As you said, Cruz an Paul did a fine job and DeSantis failed. Which is too bad as I like him and would like to see him position himself for 2028.

Let him run...

He can’t win.

Bannon’s speech at CPAC ( https://www.c-span.org/video/?526366-24/steve-bannon-speaks-cpac ) laid out the case for DJT...

No one else running is going to beat that case.

The GOPe/NeverTrump/Uniparty clearly are pushing Desantis 24/7 which is going to hurt him more than help long term... and Desantis directly attacking Trump is just going to harm him even more.

This cycle is Trump’s... I don’t see anyone who is going to convince MAGA voters to vote for someone else, or stay home with Trump on the ballot.

No matter how much Fox News bans him and props up someone else.... etc.

I hope Desantis at least got something from the Uniparty/GOPe/NeverTrumpers for being their guy, because the odds of him doing long term damage to his career are far greater than the odds he will beat Trump for the nomination, so hopefully he got something to make it worth while.

I like(d) DeSantis but if he thinks he can step over Trump that makes him less viable than I thought.

Better than Trump??? I don’t think so.

Spirited debate left the building a long time ago when it comes to Trump and DeSantis

The Empty-headed one-liner, though, is here all week. And month. And year. And 18 months.

The key to being “on the conservative team” is you have to be a conservative... and that’s the real crux of this, the GOPe is NOT conservative.. they want your vote, but they have little to no use for conservatism other than lip service once elected.

Until folks wake up to the fact that the Establishment GOP are just as much a part of the problem as the Democrats, and they are effectively a UNIPARTY, nothing will change.

Desantis is clearly the selected “great white whale” of the Establishment this cycle, hoping to stop Trump... it won’t work.. but it’s clear that’s who they are banking on and long term its likely to harm Desantis far more than help him.

With no Trump (OR MAGA Equivalent) in the race, Desantis would likely be a solid front runner, but with Trump in the race, there is no math that is going to give him the nomination. I think he’s foolish to be trying to take Trump on head to head... run a token campaign to build your network for a 2028 run sure... but to try to directly take him on... far more likely to do long term damage to your brand than you are to win.

He’s looking more weasely by the day.

Lemme guess… You’re supporting the guy who throws gay parties at Mar-a-Lago and pays hush money to porn stars.

I swear, people here have forgotten what an actual conservative looks like.

Trump v DeSantis feud is a drag but that’s why it’s called Politics.

I love Trump but his boorishness is a drag and is self-defeating in that it pushes too many fence-sitters to the wrong side of the fence.

I like DeSantis well enough but really don’t know him well enough.

I’ll be glad to vote for either in 2024.

Hell, I’d vote for Shit on a Shingle in 2024 if it means a vote against whoever the Dems put up. In fact, I did vote for SoS, twice already. In ‘08 and ‘12.

I believe that for the GOP nom, it's healthy and good to have a large field of potential nominees. Let's see them all, head to head, at their very best. The debates for the GOP nom will be especially interesting and quite closely watched, that's for certain.

You have to realize, to the Trumper cult, being “conservative” has nothing to do with actual policies or actions. The only thing that matters is unquestioning and unshakable loyalty to Trump. Anyone opposing Trump in the slightest is immediately castigated as a RINO, GOPe, traitor, etc., and they are attacked, demeaned and if possible, destroyed by any means necessary including lies, innuendo and slander. That seems to be the Trumper version of cancel culture, another way in which they seem to emulate the Left.

I don’t begrudge him running, let everyone who wants to run.

I just think he’s foolish to take on Trump head to head. He’s welcome to do it.. but I think the risk to him long term are far greater than any odds of victory.

“Ron, “I Haven’t Declared My Presidential Run Yet” DeSantis? He’s looking more weasely by the day.”

DeSantis can’t officially declare until the Florida legislature passes a law that says the can run while still governor. Weasely - better than a bull in a china shop?

You’re right about the cult aspect. It rivals the Obama cult for blind obedience.

I’ve started to wonder if they may have Trump rosaries? Maybe special underwear; WWTD shirts and bracelets? Do they think a campaign donation request is a message from the divine? Do they go on pilgrimages to Trump Towers and Mar-a-Largo?
