Robert Redfield, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), says he's unpersuaded by recent reporting that raccoon dogs at a wet market in Wuhan, China, may have launched the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think it's important, first, they didn't show the raccoon dogs were actually infected," said Redfield in an interview on Rising, the YouTube show I host for The Hill. "What they showed is they could have DNA from raccoon dogs on swabs that also had the COVID-19 virus. It's not unusual for animals to be infected as opposed to being the intermediate reservoir."
Redfield proceeded to criticize both Anthony Fauci—former COVID-19 adviser to the White House and a key figure at the National Institute of Health (NIH)—and the national news media for stigmatizing the theory that the virus may have emerged as the result of a lab accident rather than animal spillover.
"I think the whole approach, particularly by the leadership of NIH, was antithetical to science," he said. "I stand by my testimony, and I know Dr. Fauci has some disagreement. But he's incorrect."
Both hypotheses should be pursued and vigorously investigated, according to Redfield.
Last month, the Energy Department concluded with low confidence that the lab leak theory was more compelling than the wet market theory. The FBI has reached a similar conclusion. Partly due to Fauci's influence, government health advisers had initially settled on a zoonotic origin; as a result, some media outlets described lab leak as a fringe idea, embraced by conspiracy theorists.
"There's a strong bias, in my view, toward trying to promote a spillover hypothesis rather than having honest scientific debate," said Redfield.

Redfield is formidable. He is far better at pinning down Fauci with factual truth than Fauci is at lying and weaseling.
And Francis Collins is just a bad joke when it comes media relations.
Wonder when scarf lady is going to get her just rewards.
This would be fun to watch if the circumstances were not so darn serious and tragic and the damage these profoundly destructive people did was not so great. .
I call BS on this one. Supposedly Birx, Fauci and Redfield had a pact to quit if one of them got fired.
Kind of like a Mafia Don dropping the dime on his rivals when the heat is on.
Redfield is a snake. He said masks were better than vaccines at one point. He is one of those people that stick their finger in the air to see what way the wind is blowing...
Covid was caused by a rodent named Antony Fauci.
Masks were always totally worthless at stopping a virus.
Vaxxxxxxines on the other hand were always nearly worthless at stopping infection or transmission. After a while, the vaxxxxxxxxines show a POSITIVE EFFICACY which means eventually the vaxxxxxxines make it MORE LIKELY you will get infected by the virus.
But the vaxxxxxines were always causing cardiac damage, degrading the body's immune system, making cancer growth more likely.....
The spike protein goes EVERYWHERE, making the body's immune system ATTACK it's own cells. They are calling it VAIDS- AIDS caused by the dangerous, untested vaxxxxxxxxines. How many years will the average vaxxxxxinated life span be shortened? Just watch the vaxxxxxxinated life spans continue to crash.
That is part of the evil plan….to shorten the lifespan cause all those old people use up so much resources in their health issues.
And yes, Redfield was in favor of masks - because he advised that masks were better protection than the vaccines and it would be preferable to wear masks and forgo vaccines to protect from covid.
In retrospect, not bad advice.
My take is masks and vaccinations didn’t do squat. When the less lethal Omicron variant became dominate health professionals started making victory laps..
