The Meaning and Origin of ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls; It Tolls for Thee’
In this week’s Dispatches from The Secret Library, Dr Oliver Tearle analyses the origins of a famous phrase about human sympathy and mortality
‘Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.’ This phrase has become world-famous but its origins, and even its meaning, are often misconstrued or at least only partially grasped. Many people would be able to identify the origins of ‘never send to know for whom the bell tolls’ in the work of John Donne (which would be correct), with quite a few of them thinking that the line originated in a poem of Donne’s (which would not be correct).
‘Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee’ is a phrase from one of John Donne’s most famous pieces of writing, but it’s not a work of poetry. Instead, this line appears in one of Donne’s prose writings:
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

I don’t get what the importance of your issue is. I don’t really CARE which came first (there’s a chicken joke here somewhere). Again, even IF Trump started in on the name-calling after DeSantis refused to endorse him...so what? It’s not even officially a ‘campaign’ season yet and DeSantis might be mulling running against Trump...hence the non-endorsement.
Point being, Trump is repeating what he did back in 2016. Turning off potential supporters and voters by childish name-calling behavior. If you’re trying to argue against that fact, you’re dead wrong.

New York has no authority to arrest Trump in Florida. They have to ask Florida authorities, specifically the governor’s office.
It is at that point that DeSantis can take official note of legal defects and point them out.

Trump gave DeSantis his endorsement and as a successful businessman he would have made it clear there would have been a return endorsement deal agreed to by DeSantis.
Trump tells us to not trust DeSantis as he cannot be counted on.

So, you’re taking issue with something that I never stated? I mentioned the possibility that Trump called DeSantis names because DeSantis did NOT jump to endorse Trump, essentially. You convoluted that into something I never said. And then you insulted my comments as if that’s what I said?

I support Ron and Don...lol. Ron is my ‘backup plan’ if they manage to disqualify Don. Which they’re still working on, feverishly. And also which is why I am vexed at all of the anti-DeSantis comments here. It’s like nothing ever changes. We’re supposed to be on the same side against the left.
I remember the anti-McCain rhetoric campaign. So many GOPers bashing McCain. How did that work out for us on the right? We can expect the same results (definition of insanity) from the same division and disunity, unfortunately. If we don’t wise up and unite (like the radical left does), we will keep losing and will lose this country forever.
