SAN QUENTIN, Calif. - The infamous state prison on San Francisco Bay that has been home to the largest death row population in the United States will be transformed into a lockup where less-dangerous prisoners will receive education, training and rehabilitation under a new plan from California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The Democratic governor will discuss his proposed transformation of San Quentin State Prison during a visit on Friday. 2 Cards Charging 0% Interest Until 2024CompareCredit.com| Sponsored

The facility will be renamed the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center and the inmates serving prison sentences there will be moved elsewhere in the California penitentiary system. The state has 668 prisoners facing death sentences, almost all of them male, and about 100 have already been moved, state prison officials said.

"Today, we take the next step in our pursuit of true rehabilitation, justice, and safer communities through this evidenced-backed investment, creating a new model for safety and justice — the California Model — that will lead the nation," Newsom said in a statement Thursday about the coming changes.

They started changing SQ to this, back in the 80s, so this confuses me a bit.

Prison is rehab of sorts. With long enough sentences, young offenders become middle aged or older and much less suited or capable of criminal activity. Declining muscle strength and reflexes, weakening eyesight and hearing, arthritis, high blood pressure, and other conditions and ailments common to aging diminish the vigor that most crimes require.

Move the inmates and close it down. Marin property is valuable.

Sure, take the punishment out of punishing criminal activity. When criminals faced years in prison at hard labor and death for murdering people the crime rate per capita was much lower, wasn’t it?

It will probably be about as big a success as Newsom has been.

Remake ALL prisons to have only single inmate, 24/7 occupancy. Including a shower and chin up bar for exercise (or suicide should the inmate choose).

Meals delivered to each cell. No reason for inmates to ever leave their cells (alive). No “yard”. No kitchen duty. No laundry duties. No license plate or any manufacturing.

For a ten year sentence, open the cell door, in you go. Ten years later open the cell door, out you go.

Escapes? NOT POSSIBLE. Murders? NOT POSSIBLE. Assaults on guards? NOT POSSIBLE. Sex between inmates and other inmates or guards? NOT POSSIBLE. Riots? NOT POSSIBLE. Gang formation? NOT POSSIBLE.

Maybe instead of sexually mutilating children, they could castrate all the prisoners at SQ.
