"Caetano v Massachusetts" is a case that was heard by SCOTUS a few years back. Caetano was convicted in a Massachusetts court of being in possession of a weapon that was declared illegal under state law. The case got all the way up to the "Supreme Judicial Court",the highest appeals court in Massachusetts. That court upheld her conviction,ruling that the particular type of weapon she possessed wasn't protected under 2A because it wasn't in use at the time 2A was adopted *and* because it was "particularly dangerous".

SCOTUS then took the case and ruled...9-0...in Caetano's favor. In the decision the justices said that the SJC's ruling was "frivolous" and in direct violation of at least one previous SCOTUS ruling.

I'm no constitutional scholar but it seems to me that the Federal courts would strike down The Big Guy's ban on "assault weapons" citing the "Caetano" decision,among other things.
