In response to the easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the subsequent increase in travel demand, airlines hired nearly 50,000 employees last year. But the industry is struggling to find enough qualified pilots.
The pilot shortage has prompted United Airlines to take a new approach and organize its own training program for aspiring pilots.
United Airlines launched its Aviate Academy in 2022 to address the shortage and diversify a workforce that is overwhelmingly White and male. The academy's first graduating class was 80% women or minorities.
"It looks nothing like the industry. But guess what it does look like. It does look like the demographic we serve. It looks like our passengers," said Ricki Foster, an aspiring airline pilot who completed basic pilot training outside of Phoenix, Arizona.
By some estimates, airlines worldwide could be 60,000 pilots short by the end of the decade. United Airlines anticipates that major U.S. carriers will have demand for 10,000 new pilots this year alone, but that only about 6,600 qualified candidates will be available.

Does a black woman get counted twice?
Not flying domestic again.
H/T Travis McGee
As if I needed any more reasons to not fly these days. Not saying women and minorities can’t be pilots. But this smacks of letting some through not as qualified as white males.
Why does the term lawn darts come to mind?
I gave up travel by air when the Covid nonsense started. If I can’t drive to the destination, I’m not going.
Do they have an “acceptable number of deaths” estimate for these diversity hires??
Safety being sacrificed to the god of inclusivity.
I would trust my life to a former military aviator. Not so with an off the street EEO appointee.
Well...there you have it. I'm with Dilbert:
I’ll drive.
Before I fly, I know my plane and seat. Its about time we know who our pilots will be and their credentials.
If she crashes, does she automatically get a heroic movie made about her with the crash pinned on "WHITE SUPREMACY" of the plane manufacturer?
Does this new program somehow created”aspiring pilots out of whole cloth. It seems to me aspiring pilots would be in the system…you know… aspiring?
I hope I am on not on the plane that puts the lie to the dumbed-down pilot training programs. It’s like a lottery.
Here comes the “diversity” body count! The MSM will report that every death was caused by white supremacists!
Pretty much anyone can learn to fly.
The controls of a plane become second nature in short order...
Former military pilots are the best choice to fill a commercial pilot position because of the extensive experience in the left seat... when so many lives are at stake it’s a logical choice to go with the experienced candidate. Interjecting any sort of quota or fairness/equity/whatever into the decision is insane.
What could go wrong...
So it’s OK to discriminate now?
And if a carrier says we’re only going to hire White males, that’s not actionable, right?
Oh sure it isn’t.
United is now a giant discrimination lawsuit target.
