The US’s March of Folly in Ukraine
American Thinker ^ | March 10, 2023 | Jared Peterson

Posted on 03/10/2023 9:57:45 AM PST by Kazan

This war need never have happened if Kissinger’s, and many others’, proposal for a neutral, non-NATO Ukraine had been accepted by the US in 2021, as Russia reasonably requested, and if Ukraine, at America’s direction, had ceased its eight year, US-sponsored war on the Donbas Russian speakers and Russian ethnics, and had enforced the Minsk II accords.

But the US Military Industrial Complex wanted a war and got one. The object: To bleed and weaken Russia with a Vietnam-like quagmire.

Russia appears to be surviving US sanctions quite comfortably, as new customers pop up in Asia for its natural gas and other vital resources, its ruble remains strong, 80% of its people apparently support their government, Europe’s, particularly Germany’s, economies are in free fall as the cost of US liquified natural gas exceeds the cost of demonized Russian pipeline gas by huge multiples, and as the BRICs develop new trade routes and payment methods in Asia and across the global south, threatening the dollar as the world’s reserve currency.

All of this, and the risk of nuclear war with a Russia that does in fact feel threatened by the US Military Industrial Complex’s thirty year pattern of gratuitously aggressive behavior:

*NATO’s relentless eastward expansion, in the teeth of explicit promises by every 1990 Western leader that such expansion would never occur if Russia accepted German reunification, withdrew its troops from Eastern Europe, and dissolved the Warsaw Pact;

*Invitations in 2008 to Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO, well known at the time to be as totally unacceptable to Russia as the Soviet Union’s attempted similar conversion of Cuba in 1962 was to the United States;

*US deep involvement in the 2014 coup that deposed Ukraine’s democratically elected, pro Russian president; US installation of sophisticated weapons systems in the new NATO countries

“NATO should have went the way of the Warsaw Pact. One without the other is in an imbalance.”

The invasions of Georgia, Ukraine, Chechnya, and threats to invade and reconquer former Soviet slave states make clear the necessity for NATO to balance the aggression of the reborn Soviet Empire.

Putin lives rent free in that head of yours. There are people far more scary than Putin in the Russian hierarchy.

That Castro clown that runs your country is worse than Putin.

Name one thing that is untrue about the points made.

You're as ridiculous as the Democrats at the House hearing yesterday attacking the journalists that exposed the FBI's suppression of the Hunter laptop story at Twitter.

Everything you and your ilk post here about the war and what led up to is a lie. And, those lies have us involved a proxy war we're losing, badly, and the potential consequences are devastating for this people of this nation.

Most of the assertions are false:

*NATO’s relentless eastward expansion, in the teeth of explicit promises by every 1990 Western leader that such expansion would never occur if Russia accepted German reunification, withdrew its troops from Eastern Europe, and dissolved the Warsaw Pact;

NATO expansion was hardly relentless. In fact, the US, France and Germany dragged their feet about it. No binding promises were made, especially -after- the Soviet Union dissolved.

*Invitations in 2008 to Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO, well known at the time to be as totally unacceptable to Russia as the Soviet Union’s attempted similar conversion of Cuba in 1962 was to the United States;

False analogy: the bone of contention in 1962 was the Soviet Union's installation of nukes in Cuba, not the Communist regime itself.

*US deep involvement in the 2014 coup that deposed Ukraine’s democratically elected, pro Russian president; US installation of sophisticated weapons systems in the new NATO countries

A coup would imply some plot. Instead, masses of Ukrainians opposed Yanukovych's reversal of Ukraine's pro-EU course and Yanukovych was installed under questionable circumstances. By 2014 he had revealed himself as a Putin sock puppet and the Ukrainian people threw him out, a likely outcome with or without US support. It's also false to assert that he US was installing 'sophisticated' weapons systems in new NATO countries. With the exception of one ABM base in Romania and some F16s, the new NATO members kept mainly their old Soviet equipment which was upgraded. In the meantime, the Bundeswehr was reduced to a shell of its former self and Obama withdrew the last US armored forces from Germany.

The more amusing thing to me is that the fundamental premise of the piece is that Russia is just interested in some rational Realpolitik balance of power. It is not. The request about Ukraine's neutrality was really a request to see if the West would do anything if Russia invaded Ukraine.

Russia's Ukraine policies are not driven by Realpolitik which is just as much an illusion as neoliberal fantasies that trade would change the nature of the Russian or Chinese regimes. Russia's policy is driven by revanchism and illusions of status, just like China's. Those illusions won't change by trade or negotiation. Russia and eventually China will have to be defeated enough to give them up.

“And, those lies have us involved a proxy war we’re losing, badly”

1. When you say “us” you are abusing the word because you are not one of us when you’re constantly cheerleading and agitating for your barbaric masters in Moscow.

2. The US and NATO are not losing the war by any measure because neither has even started to fight.

I take it as a positive sign ... if Russia is so desperate that they have to mount a full propaganda campaign of bogus nonsense like this, it clearly shows -

(a) how little public support Russia actually has, and

(b) how badly Russia is losing on the battlefield

simple 1-month conquest ... LOL

All of this is desperate propaganda by Western elites and their media mouthpieces, who are slowly beginning to realize the magnitude of the catastrophe the Ukraine war they provoked is becoming.

Today, China brokers an alliance between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Also, Victor Orban is traveling to China. The catastrophic loss of US influence in the Middle East due to the Dunning-Kreuger type, self affirmed neocon policies.

Exactly.

The MIC should have been shifted to space travel if they wanted to get rich.

Then we could have all been rich and productive instead of being bankrupt on lies, death and socialism.

So, you are admitting that Russia was right to not trust us.

Now you and your son of Castro have shown we should never have trusted French Canada from the French and Indian Wars until now.

Sir, you are a better American than any of these Putin-worshipping traitors who insistently use the words “us” and “we” when they are not any such thing.

They are spoken of in this quote:

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly against the city. But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.

For the traitor appears no traitor; he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their garments, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared. The traitor is the carrier of the plague.”

violating the 1994 Budapest Agreement,==

You should know that AFTER Budapest Memo not agreement so were NOT obligatory. There was signed a Russia-Ukraine Friendship Treaty 1999 which IS obligatory. This treaty since was signed later than memo thus supersedes the Budapest memo which now became overwritten.

But in this treaty Ukraine took the obligation to hold a NEUTRAL status in exchange for the territorial integrity obligation of Russia.

This neutrality obligation Ukraine violated in 2008 by applying to NATO. So she violated the treaty and had LOST a territorial integrity support of Russia.
