While hush money is not inherently illegal, the prosecutors could argue that the $130,000 payout effectively became an improper donation to Mr. Trumpās campaign, under the theory that because the money silenced Ms. Daniels, it benefited his candidacy.

I don’t know the details of what happened but it looks like Person A was threatening to come after Person B “legally”.
Person B paid Person A an agreed amount to “settle” the matter rather than pay mega bucks to defend himself to say nothing of his “time”.
This is done every day in America. It’s called “nuisance value”. I’ve done it myself several times. Just another desperate ploy to keep Trump out of the White House.
