Nearly two dozen people accused of coordinating a violent attack on police officers defending the proposed site of an Atlanta police training facility will remain in jail after a judge denied them bond.
Channel 2′s Michael Seiden was inside the courtroom as attorneys for the defendants argued that they be released.
The 23 defendants charged with domestic terrorism were looking to get out of jail and go home, but the judge didn’t feel comfortable releasing everyone, especially since only two of them have ties to Georgia.
The judge listened to their lawyers for most of the afternoon. The mother of one 26-year-old man from Connecticut even testified on her son’s behalf when the judge asked if she would make sure he gets back to court.
“I will accompany him myself,” Kate Early said, promising that her son was not at risk of committing a crime if he’s granted bond.
Pete Johnson, the Chief Assistant District Attorney in DeKalb County, laid out why the group should remain in jail.
“You had to make a concerted effort to go there,” Johnson said. “This group changed their clothing into all black out clothing. They had shields. They had bags of rocks. They had fireworks. They had Molotov cocktails.”
The judge ended up siding with prosecutors, denying bond for all but one of the people charged with domestic terrorism.
Thomas Jurgens, a staff attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center, was granted a $5,000 bond after prosecutors determined that he was only there as an observer and not a participant in the violence.
“Given the fact that he is a bared attorney, his claim at this point, he’s a legal observer I can’t stand here and say there’s evidence he threw something,” the judge said.

The stench from these dirty hippies in the jailhouse must be overwhelming.
The attorney should be the last to be released, not the first. And for only $5,000? Guess their are some, by profession, that are more equal than others.
Ten years for each would be great.
This is a good sign, that DeKalb DA Sherry Boston and her people didn’t do the Soros DA catch-and-release thing.
I don’t like that the judge bought this “legal observer” BS on what was clearly a violent riot with arson, felony destruction of property, and attacks on police.
If I’m a lawyer and I’m start to finish with a group that murders someone, I’m an accomplice to murder, not a legal observer, even if I don’t physically participate in the crime. This is the same thing to a lesser degree crime.
The 'word' of a leftist isn't worth what's left in the bowl when I take my morning dump.
ALL of them need at least 20 years in a Gulag.
Gitmo?
Yet.
Lock ‘em up for as long as the J5 ppl have been in. Then propose a prisoner swap for their release.
Ernie Pyle a famous WWII war correspondent died reporting on his dog face soldiers he was embedded with at Okinawa in 1945. He went in harms way and took the punishment. Eff the attorney, he fries like the rest of them. IMO

Interesting that there are only two individuals in that insect-infested mob that are actually from Georgia. It’s like they couldn’t find enough local Communists so they had to import some.
Also, I notice there are a number of trans-humans in that group. That doesn’t surprise me at all.
It’s not because he’s an attorney. It’s because he’s SPLC. A conservative “legal observer” might still be in jail.
The lawyer either turned rat or is a member of the club that George Carlin said we ain’t in.
It would be just if “Hard Labor” were still an option.
“judge bought this “legal observer” BS”
Is “legal observer” a valid thing? Does one need to be an accredited lawyer to use this defense? What other professional fields can avail themselves the use of “observer” status as a criminal defense? I am an engineer with a degree so from here forth please refer to me as a technical observer.

How much did the SPLC pay the judge to let off their terrorist who works for SPLC which denounces terrorists?
a.k.a. FBI agent.
When the FBI sends agents to right wing groups, it's to entrap them.

OTOH—if in the end he is shown to have not been throwing rocks because he was there in a coordinating capacity, I would hope that his sentence will be harsher than the others.
Have them pick up trash along the road side at minimum wage until the damage they did is paid for.
