Our democracy’s greatest threat isn’t Trump — it’s the Electoral College

‘The winner take all system disenfranchises a large part of the population.’

yes, that is the true problem with our electoral system (if we disregard hanky panky and other manipulations)...and the ridiculous thing about it is that two states, NE and ME, do award based on CD voting; if they can do so without falling apart, why can’t the rest...

‘Democrats have nothing to fear, not since cheat-by-mail-in ballots came into being.’

and is something preventing republicans from using the same tactic to their benefit...?

other than the fact that they are outnumbered by dems...

Yep. In form and function, and through times of difficulty, the United States Constitution—and Declaration of Independence—has proven to be a brilliant design for self governance. It prioritized liberty and acknowledged and enshrined rights gifted to us only by God.

So now just because we’ve got twitter and computers and satellites we should throw out an essential part of its design, the Electoral College? Sorry, I will not entertain any new schemes or algorithms for determining elections. It’s not broken and doesn’t need fixing.

Fortunately we have a Republic, not a Democracy. The Electoral College is part of the checks and balances system designed by the Founders, regulating power-sharing between the States and the Federal government.

Those who want a Democracy should teleport to ancient Athens, during the short historical period before the ineptitude of the Demos left the place in ruins.

Corrected headline: Our democracy’s greatest threat isn’t Trump — it’s the fraud and other crimes the democrat party commits.

I think we are past that.

That which has been seen, cannot be unseen.

Even the slow get it now.

The opposition is the bought and the evil.

This is such BS. We have 50 States in the USA, each holds an election. 50 elections with “popular votes” in each State. There isn’t a “nation-wide popular vote” for President. This is NOT HARD.

< my two cents>

One way of dealing with the big cities and (Democrat) vote fraud is to change the way in which the votes are reported. At present, the big cities report last and there is a propensity of uncounted ballots to be “discovered” at the last moment to swing election results. One would almost suspect that the votes were manufactured to order.

So, how would the process change? When the polls close, every precinct delivers their ballots, under seal and guard, to the county registrar. Make the precincts also certify the precinct votes reported match their voter rolls. Make the county registrar certify that every vote has been collected and secured. Only when every single vote has been certified as collected and secured to the state can counting begin.

Counting begins with the big population centers (the cities). Only when the vote count in the metropolitan counties is completed and certified as complete and reported publicly can the counting in the smaller counties begin. The same process is followed until all counties have been reported and the state Secretary of State certifies the voting results.

Yes, it will delay the public knowing voting results. But, by eliminating so much simultaneous action in so many different locations, it will allow the party election monitoring teams to more easily focus resources and verify procedures are being followed. This should improve public confidence in the election process - especially, if the veil is lifted and periodic reports - again certified - are being issued as events unfold. It will also immediately underline when something (or someone) has gone wrong and allow for on-the-spot correction. Finally, it will make it a lot more difficult for the big cities to suddenly discover unreported ballots that must be counted and (let’s not kid ourselves) seem to inevitably swing the election in the Democrats favor. If they are going to attempt to cheat, they are going to have to do it up front in the process and be exposed to a lot more risk of being caught.

By the way, in addition to the procedural changes, make failure to follow them or immediately correct missteps subject to very harsh criminal and civil penalties. Penalties that cannot be pardoned or commuted, or convictions expunged. Penalties so severe that they will make county registrars glad to be term limited if only for their own protection.

< / my two cents>

You’re asking DEMs to set forth voting violation punishment for other DEMs. Good luck with that!

You’re afraid to have a fair election against Trump or to even allow him to run, but you support democracy?

Wow. The electoral college provides these idiots with a talking point that it should be rescinded. But there is another problem in getting a constitutional amendment to rescind the electoral college passed by 3/4 of the states that is the same issue they are complaining of with the electoral college, that is that each state only gets one vote; either yes or no. California’s large population’s desire to pass such an amendment is cancelled out by Idaho’s small population saying NO to the amendment. The constitution does not allow for a “popular” vote for amendment success or failure. They would need to convince 3/4th’s of the states legislatures to ignore their citizen’s desires concerning the amendment in order to pass it. Not going to happen.
