I hope the women of Ukraine take on the job, after seeing their sons husbands fathers and grandfathers dragged into vans and then weeks later listed as “missing”

Tens of thousands of families will never see a dime from the military that labels their men as missing or deserters, to avoid paying pensions

Ukraine has removed its better troops from Bakhmut and replaced them with Border Guard units and fresh conscripts. This has been publicly discussed. This also indicates how easy it is to defend the city and some of its environs because they are holding the high ground. The Russians advance to the north is in two prongs following the low ground. If that advance becomes too threatening the Ukrainians will withdraw to pre-prepared defensive lines behind the city. The Ukrainians have been killing Russians at Bakhmut at a 7 to 10:1 ratio so the Russian expenditure in lives and ammunition has made it worthwhile to hold the place despite their own losses.

All you have to do is look at a topographic map.

Months of assault and the armed forces of the Great and Glorious Republic of Russiastan have still not taken a town now held by a few thousand second rank troops.

What that map shows is the Russis holding the high ground surounding Bachmut.

Where's the great kettle you've been promising for months? Nowhere because infantry advancing on foot don't have the mobility to create one. Current Russian offensive operations are even worse than last summer's failures.

Regarding Bakhmut, months of assault and the armed forces of the Great and Glorious Republic of Russiastan have still not taken a town now held by a few thousand second rank troops.

Bakhmut itself sits on higher ground facing the Bakhmutovska river to the east. On the north from Kromove to Yahidne is an escarpment overlooking another valley to the south. The Russians approaching Bakhmut itself have to cross those valleys, which is why the Ukrainians last week blew one of the retention dams on the north side to flood the valley there. Even with gaining Yahidne the Russians would still have to cross the valley to assault the city itself.

So, Google Earth is lying, and all of those maps showing Russians occupying 3/4 of an arc circle around Bakhmut are just fiction. Glad to hear the Ukes are holding the city with not problem and all of the hullaballoo is about nothing. Good to know.

I didn’t say they were holding the city with no problems. I said they are prepared to withdraw to backup fortifications but the city is currently able to be held by a small number of second-rank troops because of a combination of terrain and the idiocy of the Russian armed forces. The other factor is of course the weather, which has warmed and the rain has started, limiting mobility on both sides.
