There are just two roads out of Bakhmut for Ukrainian troops. Russian forces are within rocket range of both of them. And that means that, after nine months of brutal fighting, the battle for Bakhmut is entering what could be its decisive phase.
In the coming hours or days, it’s possible one of two things will happen. The Russians advance so close to the two roads that the Ukrainians retreat in order to avoid encirclement. Or the Ukrainians counterattack and push back the Russians.
The former would resolve the long, awful fight over Bakhmut. The latter would prolong it. In any event, the ultimate outcome should be the same. Whether or not they capture the virtually lifeless ruins of Bakhmut, the Russians have expended a lot of their combat power.
Which appears to be exactly what the Ukrainians wanted. They apparently have used Bakhmut—and the Kremlin’s weird obsession with the town—to bleed Russian forces and, in so doing, set the conditions for a long-planned spring offensive.
When the Ukrainians finally attack with their new American and Swedish fighting vehicles and British, Polish, German and Canadian tanks, they could face exhausted Russian brigades, some of which will have lost thousands of men in the long fight for Bahkmut.
The Russians didn’t have to target Bakhmut, a town with a pre-war population of 70,000 that lies southwest of Russian-occupied Severodonetsk, one of the bigger cities in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region.
The town itself isn’t worth much. There are no strategic industries in Bakhmut. No irreplaceable logistical facilities. Almost all of its residents have fled or died.

You see, Russia winning in Bakhmut means they are actually on the verge of losing.
You’re gonna have to just trust the main stream media on this, but its a FACT.
“… Which appears to be exactly what the Ukrainians wanted. They apparently have used Bakhmut—and the Kremlin’s weird obsession with the town—to bleed Russian forces…”

Yeah… it’s very fortunate that those crafty Ukrainians have lost so little in terms of men and materials. /sarc

What do free Ukrainians in the port city of Kherson say about that?
It does appear to be a pyrrhic
Who doesn’t know that winning is actually losing.
The Russians aren’t primarily fighting for territory.
They are focused on attrition.
On keeping Ukrainian forces in the kill box.
Who runs out of warm bodies and ammo first?
We’ll see.

And Ukraine losing in Artyomovsk means they are actually on the verge of winning

The Russians are in Bakhmut for one reason. If the Ukes don’t defend it, the Russians can roll east easily, and will probably liberate Slavyansk and the rest of the Donbass quickly.
So the Ukes had to pour in. One of the main goals of the Russians is to destroy the Uke military. So you need a roach motel they can’t resist where you can chew them up with artillery.
More than anything else, the point of Bakhmut is to kill off the Uke army. Draw them into the area and pound them...as many as Kiev will send.
It’s truly tragic. All Kiev has to do is swear off abuse of Russian speakers, and be neutral. That’s it.
If this is the big Russian offensive, then yeah they are in trouble.
This article mentions the new fighting vehicles Ukraine is about to deploy.
The unfortunate truth is that the leaders of Ukraine don’t really are what happens to the people of Ukraine. It’s a business deal. Ukraine sends troops to use the weapons that are sent by the countries that are supplying them. The money aid is used to buy real estate in other countries where the leaders can retreat to when the bottom falls out. A large percentage of the money sent by the United States government is returned to the United States but not to the American people. I wonder why Janet Yellen has to go to Ukraine. Maybe she needs to bring something back that she can’t get through the regular mail so to speak. Like maybe a suitcase or two full of cash. Ukraine is a huge money laundering operation for elites looking to cash in. They foment a war, provide the support and skim a little off the top. I really wish that they would get caught but there is such a large number of people who are in on it. The people who are responsible for doing the catching are also on the receiving end of the dividends.
Wining is losing...when are people going to wake-up? TRUMP should be President already...to end the madness. DESANTIS is a uni-party Trojan horse BEWARE(more of the same).
Is something like that happening at Bakhmut? It surely seems so, with Russian losses exhausting their offensive power. And the developing heavy mud season from the spring thaw will impede advances for several weeks or months, depending on weather and terrain.
Also, in fighting for Bakhmut, the Ukrainians defended a minor territorial objective and gained time for further deliveries of weapons from the West. As it happens, in the coming months, the Russians now confront better trained Ukrainian troops equipped with an abundance of anti-tank missiles, automatic grenade launchers, small infantry mortars, and long-range rocket artillery.
Soon, when the summer dry season firms up the ground, a clutch of western model tanks like Leopards and various infantry fighting vehicles will give the Ukrainian army a potentially decisive offensive punch. The apparent operational plan is to sever the supply lines to Crimea and attack key objectives there with long range rocket artillery.
Due to the importance of Crimea, the Russian army will have to try to defend it, stripping other areas of troops and weapons to do so. This will hollow out the Russian military and leave key parts of their lines weakly defended. This could leave the Russian army poised for a military collapse if the Ukrainians can muster a well-organized attack against key points essential to the Russian position.
I am so stressed I need a $40,000 shopping spree in Milan,
at two miles per six months...
the Russians will be in Kiev in 80 years
if Putin can hold on that long
“For the Overextended Russian Army, Winning In Bakhmut Could Mean Losing Later”
Russia has moved about 2km west on the Bakhmut Front in over a year, I kind of doubt they’re ‘overextended’. But then again, this is Forbes, and their record on this war even makes CNN look honest.
“What do free Ukrainians in the port city of Kherson say about that?”
Got any links to that effect (civilians actually living in Kherson)? Everything I hear about Kherson says it’s a no-man’s zone and anyone who sticks their head up gets a few shells coming at them.
“It does appear to be a pyrrhic”
Could be, but we’ll know for sure after Bakhmut. If Russia rolls west pretty much unimpeded, then its value will have been shown. If Russia gets tied down for months at the next town, then they accomplish much - so we’ll find out.
Now this is cope.
