Beijing will speed up its “reunification” plan for Taiwan, a deputy to the top legislature said ahead of its annual meeting that starts this weekend.
“The [Communist] Party’s overall strategy for resolving the Taiwan issue in the new era has basically taken shape, and the strategic goals and focus of the future reunification cause have also become very clear,” National People’s Congress deputy Li Yihu said.
“The mainland will promote national reunification on a fast development track,” Li told China Review News Agency in an interview published on Monday. It comes as tensions are soaring across the Taiwan Strait and amid speculation that Beijing could attempt to take the self-ruled island – which it claims as part of its territory – by force in the next few years.
Li made the remarks days before this year’s meetings of the top legislative and political advisory bodies – known as the “two sessions” – begin on Saturday.
A series of new policies, including on Taiwan, are expected to be unveiled during the gathering, along with the defence budget and a government reshuffle. Comments made by NPC deputies such as Li can provide some insight into Beijing’s policymaking, which remains largely secretive.
In the interview, Li – who is also dean of the Taiwan Research Institute at Peking University – said 2022 was an “extraordinary” year for cross-strait ties and that its major events would “have a certain impact on the future direction” of the relationship.

I’m not. I was sarcastically pointing out the increasing difficulties facing Neocon foreign policy.
If I understand correctly, China is going to invade Taiwan, kill thousands of people, destroy territory and infrastructure all so they can “reunify” China.
China can easily wait another 20 years and continue to expand its military capabilities while America continues to decay. Time is on their side.

This is China’s answer to our claim that they were responsible for the Virus. I suspect that China will have more answers for us, when our Defense Contractors start trying to order raw materials and piece parts to replace the $100B or so worth of hardware that we dumped in Ukraine.

I think they will GO very soon.
Biden will stand back and issue Harshly worded memos.
The UN and neighbors will call for action, and wait for US to intervene. And when we don’t they will not act.
I think they feel they need to act NOW, and have it OVER by the time the next Pres is in.
Their only real fear is that Taiwan could hold out long enough for a new president that is willing to act and the neighbors joining in.
So, I expect that China’s action will be MASSIVE.

On this one, I hope and fear you are wrong. If China attacks Taiwan, they will likely be in a hot war with the United States, Japan and Australia.
It isn’t going to end it can only be deterred.

They aren’t planning to attack Taiwan because Biden is a warrior.
They are going to attack because they believe he is weak and compromised.
And the attack will involve some direct, at least electronic, actions against our forces.

I'm not so sure. I think the CCP will eventually end up on the ash heap of history for the same reasons that the Soviet Union did. There is little room for innovation in their system and their expertise is in copying technology. The one child policy where boys only were chosen has proven disastrous. They have an aging population and will be surpassed this year by India as the most populous country. They have only succeeded because they have been aided and abetted by those in this country who sold us out for a profit from slave labor. I think China is wanting to fast track the reunification not just because they see the US weak with Biden at the helm, but also because they can see that right now they are close to their zenith both economically and militarily. The only question to me is whether the ash heap that they are confined to is just theirs or they plan on taking the rest of the world with them.

Get a bunch of europeans shooting at each other (their natural state anyway) have your adversary arm one of the sides and keep a close count on how much of what is no longer in inventory. When the numbers give you a clear maximum losses possible number that is lower than your limit, you pull the trigger. Commies are good at the sort of math.

In my opinion this is just face-saving talk from the CCP. They can’t afford to conquer Taiwan, if they can, because a combination of sanctions, boycotts, and a blockade of oil going through the Straits of Malacca would destroy their economy. So they will have to wait for a better opportunity, if it ever comes, or permission from DC.
Which neighbors? Japan has been neutered by the U.S. South Korea's focus is on North Korea. The Philippines and Vietnam aren't going to war for Taiwan. And Australia is half owned by China.
