AFP) — Pressure is mounting on Ukrainian forces as fighting for the eastern frontline city of Bakhmut is getting ever more brutal with Russia losing hundreds of troops a day, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday.

As the battle raged, Moscow said it shot down Ukrainian drones targeting civilian sites in Russian territory while another one crashed near the capital.

AFP aerial footage released Tuesday showed almost all buildings in Bakhmut in ruins and smoke rising over the city once known for its sparkling wine production and salt mines.

Human wave attacks. It’s been the Russian way of war for centuries. Huge costs, but Russia has also won most of those wars.

This is the last war that Russia is going to use this tactic. Their demographics will doom them in the future. Their nation is nihilistic and it's filled with gulags. People are not going to reproduce for Mother Russia.

Russia loses 200 men a day and Ukraine loses 50. Pretty soon there will be no more Ukrainians.

Bakhmut is a wrap, major transportation hub that will speed the wrap up of the situation. Not sure where Russia will put the border, and Poland is still in mobilization. Am thinking that they are wanting their old territory back.

The Eukrainian mess is far from over sadly.

The total dead in this war is aprox 14000/200000 (Russians/Ukrainians). This is verified in the UK no less.

If Russian artillery starts expending huge numbers of shells, then it will be evident that the trans Siberian railroad delivered the Chinese munitions despite Biden’s warnings.

Uh, no, it's not. It's a 6 square mile town, no bigger than any small American town, near a salt mine and with roads to no where. It's strategically worthless. Look at a map lately?

Honestly, Ren, you could not be more wrong. Your crazy assertion is either delusion or preposterous propaganda. It is clear the Russians are making concerted efforts to preserve men and fight only when the ratios are decidedly in their favor. It is the Ukrainians who are tragically throwing away lives to no purpose.

So you are asserting the Ukrainians threw away tens of thousands of lives for nothing? If that’s true, Ukraine is in desperate need of regime change.

Yep, it is a shame for Ukraine to take 50k casualties over it since December, of them 18k KIA.

If Zelenskys past statements are any guide, his claim of “hundreds of Russian deaths a day” is exaggerated by at least one, and more likely two orders of magnitude.

It's strategically worthless.

Ukraine seems to be tossing in a lot of men and supplies into a meat grinder in a strategically worthless city. The war of attrition favors Russia (it's bigger). So, Ukraine has a dumb strategy.

Opinion seems to differ on what comes next. Some say that Ukraine simply falls back to the strong defensive lines behind Bahkmut and it's no big deal. Other people say that there are no more defensive lines and that once Bahkmut falls, everything rolls up like a map.

I've got popcorn.

What is the definition of losing the battle. It seems like every time the Russians are “victorious” in claiming a city, the so called “City” is nothing more than a pile of rubble. When there is nothing left of what you have gained, what have you won?

Proof of that claim?

My 2₵s: Ukraine will start withdrawing from Bakhmut in a few days. They got their value of it it better than Russia, except for the Ukrainians who had their homes destroyed for Russia's ambitions.

By holding onto Bakhmut as long as possible, other Ukrainian cities are not getting shelled to rubble. Russia is trading lives of untrained conscripts for a few meters per day. Ukraine is trading those meters for time to train soldiers, get more equipment, and reinforce defenses further onward. This is what Russia should have done in earnest after withdrawing from Kyiv and seeing what weapons Ukraine was getting. The Russian general staff kept at the short war plan, which was no longer functional once HIMARs got to work last July.

In a few more days Bakhmut will be a Pyrrhic victory for Russia and loss Ukraine is already making good. After Bakhmut, Russia is not going to go anywhere faster for winning it either. Its the beginning of the mud season, which helps Ukraine on defense more than Russia on offense. Leopard IIs are arriving and crews will have more time to formalize themselves.

Ha. Just last week you were claiming that Russia would die on the rock of Bakhmut and now you say it is no big deal. It's fun to watch you 'Baghdad Bob' the situation.

That is hilarious. Now tell me why Sherman's March during the Civil War was a failure. Shortbus armchair warriors have nothing on you.

Think China isn’t helping? WE know North Korea is (with China’s approval) and Iran. China is sending :Non lethal aid what ever that means—BUT China and Russia are allies so if Putin gets on the horn and weapons will start coming—lets hope Xi doesn’t send troops with the weapons. With China’s help—Russia can’t lose in Ukraine—and what will China expect? When They move on Taiwan, Russian naval units will keep Japan’s Navy busy as North Korea will keep South Korea busy. Biden and this silly war has formed a block of nations —a new Axis of Evil far more Powerful than the one Hitler forged with Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania, and Finland. Think of this—The Sino-Russian pact has the worlds largest Navy. The most Nukes, The largest Army. and an industrial base—oil and resources. We better be clever if we hope to beat them. I don’t see a lot of clever in Washington these days.
