Normally I would guess a ring of gays who compromised security, but of course they would receive medals. More likely they refused to preach transgenderism.
As juicy as this sounds, odds are that it was something like a spike in DUIs in the group, and probably in one specific squadron. It also could have been drug use.

My guess is the “extra” attention caused something to be discovered.
That many leaders at once should be concerning. That reeks of conspiracy. I am thinking of some weird sex thing, old boys network, gambling, or some vice of that nature.
Mission Support is a secondary function. If they were going to can someone because of the spy baloon, it would be the Wing Commander.

I knew a guy who worked those bases in the 80s. He said it was such boring duty, they stayed stoned most of the time.
