Military exchange stores should stop selling guns to troops under 25 years old and require across-the-board waiting periods on firearm and ammunition purchases to reduce high suicide rates, an independent advisory panel to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is suggesting.
The firearms restrictions, along with repealing a law passed by Congress in 2013 barring the military from tracking gun purchases, could help reduce the alarmingly high number of troops who continue to kill themselves, the Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review Committee said in its report released Friday.
Austin created the advisory panel in March 2022, saying the rate of military suicides was too high. The deaths increased 44% between 2015 and 2020 despite a decade of new policies and spending on the problem, and the committee -- focusing on an issue that is a political lightning rod -- said it found guns and access to guns on base play a central role.

Probable reality: There is a big suicide problem and the authorities are grasping at straws after a decade of not fixing it somehow.
Any insight here from someone recently in the military? Thanks.
Instead of restricting guns why don’t you boxes provide proper mental health services?
Disarming American citizens. Disarming the police. Disarming our defense forces.
Notice any pattern here ?
The communists are laughing laughing laughing just how stupid people are
Is there a Suicide problem in the military and among Veterans?
Yes
Is it caused by easy access to Guns?
No
Causes are high Operations Tempo, coupled with the new troop being a Gen Z type that is not used to adversity.
The new woke “Give Them a hug” style and the paradox of constant demands on the Gen Zers causes a lot of instability
Them going after guns is nothing more than them applying the same tired template to a problem they don’t want to do the hard work they need to do to fix the problem
I’ll stick with the probable reality.
They need to address the root cause of the suicides, not the method.
What nonsense they always go after the legitimate user just like with pain meds and so forth
Yes, because all suicides are done with guns. Not with drugs, knives, jumping from a building, hanging, etc. always with GUNS.
Maybe, instead, the military could change operational conditions to make a soldier’s life something besides hell on earth. Maybe, instead, the military could provide quality care to those who need it.
Any insight here from someone recently in the military? Thanks.
If the troops are to unstable to buy a gun perhaps they should be removed from the military and not be recruited in the first place.
The suicide rate is not linked to guns. It is linked to mental health issues which, in turn, are linked to drug use. The rise in marijuana usage, which causes depression in many users, is the number one contributor to suicides.
Root cause? Maybe the Token Afirmitive Action Sec Def should look in the mirror. Go to Hell Lloyd Austin and take Milly Vanilly and the rest of the Wokester officers with you!!
THEY are the root cause.
Protect the military by keeping them away from dangerous objects, like firearms. How many generals did it take to think that one up?
This is the only solution they could come up with?
Pathetic.
What about razor blades, poisons, drugs overdoses, carbon monoxide, rope, bridges, rivers, highway overpasses, cliffs, “suicide by cop”, etc. What are you ****ing wizards going to do about those techniques? Hmmmm? Stupid retards. Knock off the Nazi gun confiscation routine. You morons are supposed to be on “We the People’s” side.
But. But.....war with China is coming.
Because that would make too much sense.

There was a problem in 2015. New policies and spending made it worse.
Here’s an idea...Let’s load it up with even more policies and spending. It’s bound to work this time. SMH

If there is a suicide problem on base to the point the military has to restrict gun purchases, we have more serious issues with recruitment than they want to admit. Removing guns is just masking the symptoms and ignoring the actual problems.
