FDA redefines 'milk': Dairy State senator slams approval of label for plant-based substitutes

Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin on Thursday slammed the Food and Drug Administration for its ruling in favor of plant-based milk substitutes, signaling conflict ahead between the agency and a lawmaker representing the state synonymous with dairy farming.

The FDA ruled this week that U.S. manufacturers will be able to continue calling certain liquids "milk" even though they come from plant-based sources such as almonds and soy.

The ruling came over the protests of dairy farmers who seek to reserve the designation "milk" for true milk. The FDA said in its draft guidance that the "milk" label is "strongly rooted in consumers' vocabulary when describing and talking about plant-based milk alternatives."

Baldwin slammed the ruling on Wednesday. "I took a stand for Wisconsin dairy farmers by calling out [the FDA's] guidance allowing plant-based products to be labeled as 'milk'," she wrote on Twitter. "This misguided act hurts our farmers & we must protect the integrity of dairy products."

Posting a dictionary definition of milk as "an opaque white fluid rich in fat and protein, secreted by female mammals for the nourishment of their young," Baldwin wrote, "If you're wondering, the definition of milk hasn’t changed."

Wisconsin in 2021 led all states in number of dairy farms, with 23% of the U.S. total, and produced 14% of the national milk supply, which ranked second to California.

FedGov is an old hand in these sorts of situations.

They knocked on John Taylor’s door in Trenton, NJ some time in the first decade of last century. In that case, as opposed to this one, they arguably got it right.

From Wikipedia:

Taylor ham is the common name for pork roll, a food developed by John Taylor of Trenton, New Jersey, late in the 19th century.

Taylor is the brand name for pork roll made by Taylor Provisions, Inc., of Trenton. Taylor also manufactures pork roll under the Trenton brand. Trenton by Taylor has been an advertiser on the outfield wall at Mercer County Waterfront Park in Trenton since it opened in 1994. Other companies making pork roll include Case Pork Roll, Kohler Provisions and Loeffler Gourmet. (The Case Pork Roll manufacturing facility had a fire years ago but reopened quickly.)

Taylor kept the recipe for the product he created in 1856 secret. Taylor originally called his product “Taylor’s Prepared Ham”, but was forced to change the name after the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was passed, since the product did not meet the new legal definition of “ham”. The new name was “Pork Roll” and it was marketed as both “Taylor’s Pork Roll” and “Trenton Pork Roll”. Competitors marketed products with similar names like “Rolled Pork” and “Trenton style Pork Roll” and were sued by Taylor. A 1910 legal case ruled that the words “Pork Roll” could not be trademarked.

In 1910 it was described as “a food article made of pork, packed in a cylindrical cotton sack or bag in such form that it could be quickly prepared for cooking by slicing without removal from the bag.”

Pork roll is generally sold in 1, 1.5, and 3 lb. unsliced rolls packed in a cotton bag, as well as 6 oz. boxes containing 4, 6, or 8 slices. Larger rolls and packages are available for food service customers. It is also sold at delicatessens, diners, lunch stands and foodtrucks in the region. It has also been a staple in public school cafeterias in New Jersey.

The product is generally eaten sliced and grilled, like Canadian bacon. A slice fits neatly on a round roll, and it is frequently eaten as part of a breakfast sandwich, most often also including egg and cheese.

Pork roll generally comes in one-, three-, and six-pound sizes, as well as six-ounce boxes containing eight single-thickness slices or four double-thickness slices.

Funny. Taylor pork roll was a family favorite a long, long time ago.

plant-based milk is incredibly horrible. I don’t care if it’s made of nuts, plants or any other BS. It’s all horrible. Milk is milk. Plant-based anything makes my skin crawl

It seems as if most of the Feds have been consuming copious amounts of milk.

Milk of the Poppy, that is.

as long as it is clearly labeled I don’t have a problem.

if it says “Soy Milk” or “Peanut Milk” or “Coconut Milk”

as long as the prefix is the same size font as the ‘Milk’

Silk is good too. Maybe even Milf short for ‘milk fake’ would be ok too.

They probably used the woke tranny defense allowing oats, soy, almonds etc to ‘identify’ as milk producers.

See, issues like this arise when definitions of words can be changed willy-nilly. Nobody agrees on anything and common sense is lost in daily communication.

Bless Wisconsin’s heart.

Anyone old enough to remember when margarine had to be sold white with included yellow dye so as not to be confused with real butter? I believe for many years margarine was illegal in Wisconsin.

Was just telling hubby, tonight, at dinner....how long before all beef, chicken, lamb, pork, dairy and egg regulations are thrown out the window.

Remember that cancer ridden chicken....that they used for their fake meat? Well, no telling what other *food* products that will also show up in.

See why you will eat bugs, and like it?

🙃
