LIMA, Ohio (AP) — Thousands of miles from the front lines, a sprawling manufacturing plant in the small midwestern city of Lima, Ohio, is playing a critical role in the effort to arm Ukraine as it fends off the Russian invasion. Owned by the Army and operated by General Dynamics, the plant is expected to refurbish Abrams tanks for the U.S. to send to Ukraine, and is already preparing to build an updated version of the vehicle for Poland, U.S. Army officials said Thursday as they toured the facility.

I have family that live in Lima. A cousin-in-law worked at the tank factory. One time my aunt brought me a mug with an M1 on it.

My aunt and uncle lived in a small, nearby town called Wapakoneta. It was where Neil Armstrong was born.

Lima was once the home of the Baldwin Locomotive Works.

My only sight of a running Abrams came during a business trip there. Standing just outside a shop door I saw one headed out to the test track, and wondered how it could be so quiet. Gas turbine power, of course, and I was expecting a roaring Diesel. Other impression was how cramped they are inside. Not a job for a six foot three x 200 pound soldier. My hat’s off to the guys who fight those things!

As per various knowledgeable people (inc The Chieftain on YouTube), the M1 is quite roomy inside in comparison to the others, including the Leopard II.

“We actually have to custom build these tanks so that they don’t have the special armor and other advanced systems that our own M1s have. The Pentagon doesn’t want them falling into Russian hands if they’re destroyed or captured. Besides, we’re only sending 31 tanks anyway.’

"the plant is expected to refurbish Abrams tanks for the U.S. to send to Ukraine, and is already preparing to build an updated version of the vehicle for Poland,"

It wasn't that long ago there was news that the Lima plant would be shut down. Then they started getting foreign contracts and upgrades. It would have been unfortunate had the company needed to try to replace lost tank design and fabrication expertise had the plant actually closed.

One of FNC’s retired military generals said it would take 6-8 months to get these tanks to the front. That assumes they will be actually used in combat.

When I was a kid, they built many of these in Detroit. I worked at a sporting goods store and we made hundreds, maybe thousands of blue hats with a M1 Abrams patch. I guess they were given to the employees at the tank plant.

Back in the day, Russian tankers could not be taller than 5’ 7” (170 cm). The U.S. likes aggressive tankers, and large men tend to be more aggressive, “Napoleon Complex” not withstanding.

the plant is expected to refurbish Abrams tanks

More drive by reporting.

It will not be refurbishing MIA Tanks - it will be building new ones - the same one Poland is getting: MIA2M.

Refurbishment means stripping the Depleted Uranium armor off and that is a huge undertaking, complete with safety and environmental issues that greatly complicate the process.

At about $10,000,000 per tank, it's only $310,000,000.00 but don't worry, it's tax payers money {and it's not real money, anyway}.

It was first Ike that warned us about the military/gummint complex, and boy was he right.

Other impression was how cramped they are inside.

Compared to the M60, an M1 is luxurious inside.
