Tylenol After Surgery? Why The Feds Make Patients Suffer Needless Pain
cash.org ^ | Feb 16, 2023 | Josh Bloom

A decade ago, most people thought of Tylenol (acetaminophen) as a medicine for fever, malaise and minor aches and pains. Nobody imagined that it would become the go-to drug for treating moderate, let alone severe, postoperative pain.

But this is just what has happened. Thanks to pressure from lawmakers, government agencies and policymakers who inserted themselves into the patient-doctor relationship, patients became the victims of the never-ending war on drugs.

Now, doctors frequently offer only acetaminophen to treat painful conditions despite the drug’s inability to remedy them.

Policymakers’ exaggerated fear of opioids has pressured hospitals, doctors and dentists to switch to acetaminophen, no matter how severe the patient's pain. Sometimes, the drug is given intravenously in high doses as part of "opioid-sparing protocols." We believe using the drug in this way is ill-advised, cruel and borders on malpractice.

Every od that comes in the ED has a Tylenol level pulled and gets antidote.

I can't figure out what you are saying. Surely you don't mean erectile dysfunction, for instance. What is a pulled level? Could you please explain your original post (above in italics) in layperson's terms?

Georgia is seeking a ban on kratom, a very effective plant product.

Never heard of it. Looked it up. Found this 2020 article and chart from Johns Hopkins, a respected institution. Posting it, but neither endorsing nor denouncing it due to lack of knowledge:

My sternum to belly button scar... is now invisible as well and It makes me think that the skills involved make all the difference.

Great insight! I must agree, having a long, thick scar from emergency surgery that is painful in and of itself to this day, never mind the uncleaned up adhesions inside that took years to work out.

Liberals and immature thinkers (but I repeat myself) expect perfection in a president. One flaw, and he(she) is worse than Hitler. Reagan made several very bad decisions. But Reagan was the only really good president between Eisenhower and Trump.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a common brand name made up for marketing purposes. The equivalent common brand name in the UK is Panadol (paracetamol).

Acetaminophen and paracetamol are the same chemical.

Same ingredient; different dialect of English; and therefore, different drug regulations about how the name of the chemical is used in the US vs the UK/Canada.

I don’t know the origin of the difference; maybe one of the docs, pharmpersons or nurses on the thread knows.

Oh, thanks. So an overdose patient who is not dead yet has their blood examined for too much Tylenol. Thank you! Great insight!

there is a long time between overdose and dead with tylenol, but only a certain amount of time the antidote work.

Watched a guy who attempted suicide with tylenol and a six pack, before the antidote was known, turn yellow and die as his liver died. By that time he didnt want to die anymore, but there was no option

Now, antidote, or even a cadaver liver for a bit.

In France they use acetaminophen. Because on vacation there we went to the pharmacist and he didn’t understand Tylenol but looked it up in his pharmacy book.

“Policymakers’ exaggerated fear of opioids has pressured hospitals, doctors and dentists to switch to acetaminophen, no matter how severe the patient’s pain.”

It wasn’t fear. There was money involved in the form of lawsuits. Pharmacies and doctors across the land were sued, and lawyers and states got rich. Now there are pain med shortages.

Welcome to Pain World if you need surgery. You get a seven day supply of pain meds, if you are lucky. After that, too bad.

When I asked for it in Italy for my kid, I didn't know what word they used, but I was able to tell the pharmacist what the symptoms were and what area of the body the medicine acts on (liver = fegato). I'm a foodie, so I knew that word in Italian -- LOL! The pharmacist understood right away.

I had another translation issue when I had an asthma attack because they didn't have catalytic converters on the cars then, and the exhaust was putrid. I told the pharmacist—in Italian—"I didn't know the word for it, but in English, it's 'bronchodilator' "—which I pronounced in English. He burst out smiling and said, "O, bronchodilatore! Uno momento!" (Just a minute!)

When we were in the French pharmacy my sister kept saying Tylenol over and over so the pharmacist had his book out and it was going on and on. Finally I took a pen and wrote Tylenol on a piece of paper and showed him. He said “Ooh Teelynol”. And that was that. They just pronounce it differently but she showed us the book and I saw acetaminophen in the description.

Even if he knew English, a Frenchman would never give her the satisfaction of knowing he understood her. They are such pains in the arse about their vaunted language. Even the French Canadians are that way.

So, why is 500 MG aspirin so hard to find?

Max on the shelves I see now is 325 mg.

I think they reduced it, because two tabs, 1 gm is a pretty hefty dose.

Every year there seems to be a new benefit for Aspirin.

I’m not surprised to hear that it’s showing value as an anticoagulant.

I don’t see why not. Taken, however, for what reason eg headaches, minor muscle joint pain etc?

Ibuprofen, as in Advil and Aleve, is worse for you. Don’t ever, ever take more than two of the 200 mg tablets at a time. Stick with one if you possibly can.

On the one hand government hands out crack pipes and allowed drug cartel members access to our young.

On the onter and doctors refuse patients relief from pain because they fear a 70 year old man will become an addict if he’s allowed drugs that work after surgery..

Why is this happening? Because our ‘elites’ are stupid and/or white trash...
