The Buildup To War In Ukraine - February 15 2022 (part of daily series)

After the 2014 coup in Kiev the dully elected President Yanukovich had fled the country. His supporters in parliament were afraid and would no show up for further assemblies. The incoming U.S. selected government immediately set out to suppress the Russian speaking parts of Ukraine. The first move of the rump parliament, now dominated by right-wing people from west Ukraine, was to prohibit the Russian language for official business.

The ethnic Russian population in the east and southeast was opposed to the coup and rebelled against it. The new government tried to oppress it by military means. But a lot of soldiers defected to the rebels and soon those won the upper hand. The Ukrainian government troops were decisively defeated, twice. Each time the French, German, Russian and Ukrainian governments set down to come to agreements on how to proceed:

The first, known as the Minsk Protocol, was drafted in 2014 by the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine, consisting of Ukraine, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), with mediation by the leaders of France and Germany in the so-called Normandy Format. After extensive talks in Minsk, Belarus, the agreement was signed on 5 September 2014 by representatives of the Trilateral Contact Group and, without recognition of their status, by the then-leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). This agreement followed multiple previous attempts to stop the fighting in the region and aimed to implement an immediate ceasefire.

The agreement failed to stop fighting, and was thus followed with a revised and updated agreement, Minsk II, which was signed on 12 February 2015. This agreement consisted of a package of measures, including >>>>

This is the second article of a daily series setting forth the Russian position on why they invaded. In essence they claim the war started in 2014.

Would be interested in hearing rebuttals or affirmations to the article.

Being an apologist for Putin won’t get you into Heaven.

No-one can rationalize away the Holodomor. Ukrainians don’t want to be Russian vassals, which is where Yanukovich was taking them. Details are irrelevant.

The use of Russian for official business was banned in Article 10 of the 1996 Constitution which made Ukrainian the national language. A 2012 law granted Russian regional status, meaning it could be used in official business in certain regions. It was subject to suits alleging it contravened Article 10 of the Constitution and was repealed after Yanukovych was booted out.

The two languages have a lot of mutual intelligibility, so one would wonder if the use of Ukrainian was so oppressive, then why was the Constitution phrased as it was in 1996 and also why there was so little issue about it until 2012, which is to say, when Putin started to cause trouble in Ukraine.

So... I was in Kyiv in 2014, while the “Cyborgs” were still holding the airport in Donetsk. I had the opportunity to take a tour of Yanucovich’s house. His real house, not the pretend one next door that he would use to hide the incredible amount of money he had stolen from the people of Ukraine.

He drilled down from the top of his hill something like 500 feet to pump water up for his trout pond. Of course, it is too cold to keep trout there and the entire pond needed to be heated.

Inside, among the $250,000 chandelier, the salt encrusted bedroom, and the underground tunnel so the kitchen smells stayed out of the house, was one of three pianos signed by John Lennon. I don’t know if he knew how to play.

I wasn’t able to get into the garages to see the car collection, but I did get to see the private zoo. I especially liked the gazelles he had so he could have a glass of gazelle milk every morning for his breakfast.

Anyway, if you think in some way that what happened was anything other than the people of Ukraine throwing off a corrupt and criminal gang, then you don’t understand the first thing about Ukraine.

Ukraine is still a massively corrupt soceity and it will take a lifetime or two before that will change, but the people do want change. They voted in Poroshenko in the hopes he was too rich to need to steal and then Zelensky in the hopes he actually wasn’t just another corrupt politician.

The other thing Russia and the Russian people never mention is the Budapest Memorandum which Russia violated.

Our CIA inadvertently admitted to coordinating the regime change in 2014. Angela Merkel has recently admitted that the Minsk agreements were just delaying tactics until NATO could build up the Ukraine for war. Putin said, after Merkel’s admission, that ‘trust has been damaged’ and wondered if, given it was merely a delaying tactic to the proxy war, perhaps he should have invaded earlier (before NATO/US created Ukraine military had reached its strength).

Ukraine will always be a vassal state to some other countrys intervention than themselves. They cannot nor have they stood on their own.

The fact that there are so much half truths, misrepresentation, omissions, and occasional lies to refute says what is needed.

Merkel, Hollande, Poroshenko and Zelensky have all publicly admitted that none of them ever intended to follow Minsk Agreement.....In an interview with a German magazine, Zelensky himself said he never planned to honor ceasefire agreements signed with Russia in 2014 and 2015...... he basically admitted to wanting this war from the start to bait a NATO intervention - evidenced from the start and throughout this conflict he begged for Nato membership over and over again.. and that this was a global issue not just a Ukraine issue.....he still does.

Moon of Alabama was a project started by some of the members of the Daily Kos: one of the worst far left sites on the Net. See comment #13.

“Ukraine will always be a vassal state to some other countrys intervention than themselves. They cannot nor have they stood on their own.”

Even though they know the above is true, they will simply claim otherwise - all the while wanting Ukraine to be NATO’s bitch.

Sorry, though, Russia will not permit that.

About Media Bias / Fact Check Founded in 2015, Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) is an independent website that has promoted awareness of media bias and misinformation by rating the bias, factual accuracy, and credibility of media sources, large and small.

Founded after most of the Obama damage was done, to use the newly-invented "fact check" to attack the Left's political opponents during the 2016 election cycle.

I'll bet that the Halfrican never received a smashmouth "fact check" from these partisan jokers.

Actually, soon after I started seeing the term "fact check", I came to the conclusion that it was always the preface to another Media lie and spin job.

So, when I see it, I just stop reading and move on.

“History

What sucks is that they report FACTS, rather than, say “17 Intelligence Agencies Report that Trump Colluded with Russia”, or “51 Former Intelligence Officers say Hunter’s Laptop is Misinformation”.

Moon of Alabama

WikiSpooks
https://wikispooks.com/wiki/Moon_of_Alabama

‘Billmon’ is the pseudonym of an American blogger who wrote commentary on various political and economic issues of the day from a left-wing perspective.[1] His blog is renamed Moon of Alabama.[2]

Career as a blogger
Billmon was one of the earliest participants at DailyKos whose own blog, Whiskey Bar, came into being in the aftermath of the American invasion of Iraq in the spring of 2003. The actual name of the blog Whiskey Bar is taken from a line from Bertolt Brecht’s “Alabama Song,” quoted at the top of the blog.[3]

In the following 12 months, Billmon established himself as one of the leading bloggers on the left. He wrote extended pieces on domestic politics, the Iraq war, and the US economy. Billmon’s previous incarnation as a financial journalist gave him a distinct advantage when he posted on economic matters, as this was an area not well-covered by most political bloggers. The 2003 Koufax Awards gave Billmon more recognition in the blogosphere and are named after Sandy Koufax, a famous baseball player and a left-handed pitcher. In 2003, Billmon won three Koufax awards, for Best Writing, Best Post and Best New Blog. His writing was described by the judges as “clear, concise, insightful”.[4] Billmon’s own response to this description was as follows:

“Clear? I’d like to think so. Insightful? Is always in the eye of the beholder. Concise? Not even close.”
Closing down
Managing the comments on his increasingly popular site became more difficult as they continued to grow in number, and at the end of June 2004 Billmon announced that he would be closing them down.

Billmon continued posting his analysis and comments, with some periods of inactivity, over the following two and a half years.

On 28 December 2006, Billmon stopped blogging at the Whiskey Bar,[5] and the URL www.billmon.org became unavailable. In late April 2007, a more or less complete copy of Whiskey Bar re-surfaced, but was down again by October 2007. On 31 July 2008, Billmon returned to Daily Kos to post a diary entry in regard to John McCain’s presidential campaign entitled “The Great White Hope,” and has posted sporadically on DailyKos since then, also maintaining a Twitter account.

As of 31 December 2016, Billmon has deactivated his Twitter account.

Resurfacing
Another blog now serves as base for Billmon’s followers: Moon of Alabama.[6]
