Numerous red balloons floating off the coast of Florida's panhandle this week may be an unwelcome and alarming sight for some residents amid recent reports of American fighter jets shooting down unfamiliar flying objects.
But, according to Eglin Air Force Base, it's just part of a planned weather experiment by the Naval Postgraduate School. The base said a little over a dozen red balloons will be set free in the winter sky.
"Each day, balloons will be released between 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to collect weather data for a Naval Postgraduate School research project to understand the physical interaction between the lower atmosphere and the upper ocean," the base said in a Feb. 10 press release.

…. set free in the winter sky ……
Everyone’s a Captain Kirk.
I’m waiting for lawn chair guy. I know someone out there is thinking about it.
Poor timing?
99 Düsenflieger
Jeder war ein großer Krieger
Hielten sich für Captain Kirk
Es gab ein großes Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fühlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons
Thought they were Captain Kirk!................
What caliber gun would/could reach them, if possible?
When I was a kid I used to like to release helium balloons carrying notes, sort of like messages in bottles. Never got any reply.
Just think how many sea turtles you killed........That’s gotta count for something!...............
The balloons would have had to fly thousands of miles to kill any sea turtles, given the prevailing winds. Still, I suppose it’s possible that one or more made it to sea, but I doubt it.
According to the greenie-weenies, sea turtles are dying by the thousands because of helium balloons. They are still trying to get them banned.
In my 54+ years of living in Florida and up and down along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, I have only seen ONE dead sea turtle on the beach and that was after a tropical storm where it probably drowned..............
Weather is intensely important for aircraft and even missiles. The wind may completely change every 100-500 feet. Sometimes the surface winds are just the opposite of winds at altitude. This is why weather balloons are so important.
