Remember what Bismarck said “A soldier’s life is like a penny, only good when spent.” They died in a noble cause, a cause they believed was important—you may think they are wrong, but that doesn’t dampen their conviction. Well, there certainly aren’t any augmentation rings on it, so the range they were dealing with was compatible with its basic range.
This is how both Stalin and now Putin gets rid of crime/criminals. They are what W..E.B DuBois called “cannonfodder” for the Communist Party protests in the US, using blacks as their frontline advance troops.

Here he is trying to sell the story of “look at these poor Russians, how they suffer” when describing the DirleWagner thugs getting utilized.
Mass infantry attacks and indifference to troop losses are traditional to the Russian military but are a sign of desperation and near certain failure against the phenomenal destructive power of modern weapons and munitions. In the current context, that illustrates the inability of Russia to adopt modern military methods and that the new offensive will be a bloody failure in a strategic sense. At most, it may make enough territorial gains for Putin to claim victory, which seems to be what he expects to do no matter the cost in Russian lives.
