U.S. tells Ukraine it won’t send long-range missiles because it has few to spare

The Biden administration has given its Ukrainian counterparts another reason for not sending them much-wanted long-range missiles: The U.S. is concerned it wouldn’t have enough for itself.

In recent meetings at the Pentagon, U.S. officials told Kyiv’s representatives that it doesn’t have any Army Tactical Missile Systems to spare, according to four people with knowledge of the talks. Transferring ATACMS to the battlefield in eastern Europe would dwindle America’s stockpiles and harm the U.S. military’s readiness for a future fight, the people said.

That worry, along with the administration’s existing concern that Ukraine would use the 190-mile range missiles to attack deep inside Russian territory and cross what the Kremlin has said is a red line, is why the U.S. isn’t shipping ATACMS to the frontlines any time soon.

The Pentagon’s assessment of its stockpiles is informed in part by how many weapons and munitions planners think they might need to confront an enemy. Those plans have not been significantly revised since the start of the war in Ukraine, and have not recalibrated what the stockpiles the U.S. might need in reserve to face a weakened Russia, or account for the fact that Ukraine is essentially fighting that war right now.

Be nice. Balloons are tricky adversaries.

If you hit one with a glancing blow they just bounce away in a new direction.

Maybe Israel has some good used stuff the US could buy, might be better than ours.

If NATO is a paper tiger then why do you get all excited about NATO expansion?
————-

NATO missiles, NATO will install missiles on Vlads doorstep, a mere few minutes flight time to Moscow, about 600 kilometers. I don’t blame Vlad one bit, NATO now lacks men and arms, a far cry from the Cold War when the US had massive armored divisions in Germany. Poland, Germany , France have nothing, years of voluntary disarmament for social programs. Time to pay the piper.

The US has no chance of supplying arms, men, machines across the Atlantic, it will take them years to rebuild stocks on EU soil….we pulled out of that theatre years ago.

Yes, Johnny, NATO is kaput, and no longer needed. Disband them and let the EU handle their own folly.

The US arms industry is weak, very weak. We could barely handle the Iraq/ Afghanistan war. When I was advising in Colombia, US DOS couldn’t get us US manufactured 7.62, ALL our ammo came from Israel, all IMI headstamped small arms ammunition.

Our military does have some history of leaning on the Israelis to fine tune some of the hardware we make for them, and then incorporating those improvements into our hardware.

That's a reasonable answer, and the same reason Israel is reluctant to send Ukraine any Iron Dome systems.

Besides, GLSDBs are much cheaper and well suited to how Ukraine uses HIMARS.

I have done my share for the US, and yes even other foreign countries that the US had interests in….. but this one ( Ukraine) is wrong, corrupted and disgusting.

Carry on corrupted war cheerleaders, your road leads to destruction.

“FReepers can disagree without posting what you did.”

You might want to look into the posting history of the person you’re defending.

“I have done my share for the US”

By ‘training Ivans in Moscow for three years’? By constantly hating on America here on FR? By supporting a murderous dictatorial regime in Russia?
