The Archdiocese of Portland has instructed Catholic schools in the area to rebuff what it calls “gender identity theory.”
“This means that names, pronouns, facilities use, attire, and sports participation should depend upon biological sex identity, rather than self-perceived gender identity,” reads a 17-page document called “A Catholic Response to Gender Identity Theory” from Archbishop Alexander K. Sample late last month.
The National Catholic Reporter wrote Feb. 2 that the Portland archdiocese is just the latest branch of the Catholic Church to enact similar policies, but it’s likely to face blowback from its schools, including those in Portland, given the area’s progressive politics. In 2015, St. Mary’s reversed its policy against hiring gay employees after community uproar following the firing of a counselor who said she was gay and planned to marry. Sample supported the firing.
The religious news outlet, citing figures from the Archdiocese of Portland, noted that a quarter of students in the archdiocese’s elementary schools are not Catholic. The figure is 44% at the high-school level.
Among the guidelines outlined in the document:
-- Pronouns used at school must match biological sex.
-- Schools should not have all-gender bathrooms beyond single-use facilities.
-- Sports and extracurriculars “should be based on biological sex, rather than self-perceived gender.”
-- Students who wear uniforms must follow the “code that accords with his or her biological sex.”
-- “Catholic institutions should not post signage or display symbols in support of gender identity theory.”
A spokesperson for the Portland archdiocese did not immediately respond to an email Sunday seeking comment.
A person’s sex is not “assigned at birth”. A baby’s sex is determined by their sex organs. And with the exception of a very tiny fraction of a percent, their sex is patently obvious at birth.
Sample is one of the (few) good bishops.
