His private army is pushing hard to give Russia a battlefield win in Ukraine, but mounting evidence suggests the Kremlin has moved to curb what it sees as the excessive political clout of Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of Russia's Wagner mercenary group.
Prigozhin, a 61-year-old ex-convict, has grabbed headlines in recent months over his bloody role in Ukraine and is sometimes portrayed in the West as a real-life James Bond villain.
Shaven-headed and fond of coarse language, he has made a splash in Russian-language media too where he has revelled in being sanctioned by the West, publicly insulted Russia's top military brass, tried to parlay battlefield success into Kremlin favour, and detailed his recruitment of tens of thousands of convicts for his private army.
His profile became so prominent that allies and analysts began speculating he was angling for an official job or career in politics.
There is growing evidence now though that the Kremlin has moved to nip such speculation in the bud, ordering Prigozhin to halt his public criticism of the defence ministry while advising state media to stop mentioning him or Wagner by name.
Prigozhin confirmed last week he had also been stripped of the right to recruit convicts from prisons - a key pillar of his nascent political influence

Yevgeny Prigozhin didn’t kill himself.
I’ve watched many so called reports about Prigozhin. ....if the Kremlin wanted him off the field he would have been....but it won’t be because of what he’s doing in the field.
Putin is trying to recreate Stalin’s Zhukov vs. Konev competition of WW2 with Prigozhin vs. Shoigu but it’s laughable this time.
We also have our share of “monsters” in Ukraine.

It is total BS.
Prigozhin is a Putin asset. He is needed to Putin just to have an alternative example how to fight right to show to those generals of military. The many generals and officers are mostly acquired their ranks in peace time by servicing parades or exercises. They have less or nothing of a battle experience.
But Vagner is fighting all times. So they became much more effective fighting force than an ordinary military. It creates for Putin kinda the good example on effective fighting skills and also the spirit of competition for all military.
All your Kiev and Odessa are belong to Putin.

Vladimir Putin at the weekend held a meeting with representatives of the leadership of the military bloc.

The President scolded the military leadership for the failure of the initial stage of the offensive in Ukraine, pointing out that all plans were foiled, was again generous with threats and, of course, used ornate forms of swearing characteristics in relation to the participants of the meeting.
Putin directly reproached the military leadership for sparing people in vain and absolutely not saving weapons, while the president set wagner as an example for the military PMCs, and praised Prigozhin himself as a competent leader.
The military who took part in the meeting assured Putin that they would correct the situation and promised to please the president with “significant results” in the next ten days.
Putin categorically demanded the result by February 21, otherwise he promised to “revise a lot”, and this ended the meeting.
