Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Russia's Wagner Group, said Sunday that a village near Bakhmut in Ukraine had been seized after claiming that the paramilitary force had stopped recruiting convicts.
Prigozhin said in a statement that the settlement of Krasna Gora was taken by Wagner mercenaries, who have been leading Russia's attempts to seize the city of Bakhmut in the Donbas region of Ukraine, as he shared a video purporting to show the private soldiers at the entrance to the town.
Ukrainians have been enduring a grueling, prolonged fight with Russia for the city -- which Moscow views as essential for seizing the rest of the Donbas region illegally annexed by Russian President Vladimir Putin last year.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a statement Sunday that Russian forces shelled Krasna Gora and two dozen other settlements in the area, as well as missile strikes on Kharkiv including three on civilian infrastructure.
The British Defense Ministry, which has provided daily intelligence updates since the war began, said Sunday that Russia, in the last two weeks, has "likely suffered its highest rate of casualties since the first week of the invasion of Ukraine."
Using data provided by Ukraine's Defense Ministry, the British analysis shows that Russian troops have been suffering from an average of 824 casualties per day over the last week -- which is more than four times the rate reported from June to July of last year.

whoa, Russia is managing to seize small villages now
they’re losing 5000 troops killed every week, but they can seize a small village ...
Putin and his allies are trying to limit and tamp down Yevgeny Prigozhin. They know that any man with his own PMC - Private army is a man to be reckoned with. What is Putin’s private thug enforcement army? The FSB.
Always good to hear from Canada! :) You know what the East (Rus barbarianism) vs West (Europe) score is.
“ they’re losing 5000 troops killed every week, but they can seize a small village”

Damn, I thought it was only 4,800 Russian KIA each week with 70 Ukrainians KIA weekly. /s
I don’t believe Wagner as far I could throw them, but meanwhile the Ukrainians are pulling 15 year olds off the street in Odessa to put in Bakhmut.
The Ukrainian Army has not defeated the Russians in a set piece battle since the start of Russia’s Special Military Operation. Urkaine, with the full help of NATO, was unable to mount an offensive to rescue its trapped forces in Mariupol. A similar catastrophe for Ukraine is unfolding right now in Donetsk along the defense line that stretches from Bakhmut to Seversk in the north.

They ignore Russia’s unequaled natural resources (which gives it self-suffiency not enjoyed by any of the other major powers); its robust, technologically sophisticated industrial base (Russia produces viable space rockets, the United States does not); and its deeply rooted sense of national identity. They also do not grasp the devastating tactics the Russians are methodically executing on the battlefield — the Ukrainian Army and equipment are being mauled and the West has emptied its military stores and is in no condition to provide replacements any time soon.
Sonar. The same site that said the kherson offensive was failing.
Ukraine doesn’t care how many they lose, they’re literally fighting for their survival
if Russia wins, they’ll probably just execute all the leading Ukrainians anyway (see “Katyn Woods, 1940” as a scary example), so obviously Ukraine has a very strong incentive to keep fighting, *whatever* it takes
Hmm.
Kiev was a “set piece battle”. The Russian attacks across the Irpin, to the west and to the east, intended to isolate it, were met by Ukrainian forces, and stopped in open combat.
So was the attempted Russian attack on Kharkov.
So was the Russian advance on Mykolaiev.
So were all the attempt to break out of the Izyum bridgehead.
And etc and etc.....
Down to the recapture of Kherson, which was a classic siege, and the Kharkov offensive, which was a classic breakthrough and exploitation, and the taking of Lyman, which was a perfectly conventional converging attack.
What weird definition of “set piece battle” have you got in mind?

Didn’t realize the war started 3 weeks ago.

Elon Musk has entered the chat.
He’s not Canada. Well maybe he is, if he’s on Trudeau’s defense team.
A very odd statement, I agree.
SpaceX has @80% of the global launch business at this point.
Add that Atlas is still in use and has @ 20 launches scheduled.
